Gasoline Odor
OK guys, For the past couple of fill ups I have noticed a very strong gas odor eminating for the area around the gas cap ( and yes I have checked the cap repeatedly) I have never had this problem before and I haven't changed my fueling procedures or habbits.
The only change I have made to the car is the addition of a smooth air coupler.
Interesting - I have the same problem although only when I have a full tank. I noticed it a few months back (and each time I get a full tank then come right home) because the gas odor was very strong in the garage. I do not top off the tank either? Gas cap I wonder?
Usual cause is a leaking fuel filter or the crossover tube has issues. If its just right at the cap itself, have you looked at the o-ring on the cap? They will crack with age and its cheap to just put a new cap on it.

OK,
I took a look and there appears to be some sort of leak on the driver's side. Has anyone had this problem? I was hoping to get some information on what would be involved in geting to the crossover tube. Kinda tight comming from the bottom side.
Thanks!!!

Fuel Filter.....Don't drive, on mine the gasoline dripped on the exhaust pipe.

The fuel filter is easy to get too if that is the source, otherwise you will need to remove the tank shield in order to get to the tank itself. I personally have never removed the shield but it looks like it should be fairly easy. Don't hold me too that..

I don't think you have to remove the shield...if you do make sure the tank it nearly empty. Gasoline is heavy.

I found out just how heavy yesterday when i started to remove the shield and discovered it indeed held up the tank. Figured out real quick that the tank needed to be close to empty.
Anybody got a diagram showing the location of the filter? I got something from the Corvette Action Center

You do not have a serviceable fuel filter. Everything is in the tank. Try to find out where the fuel is coming from before removing the tanks, it's a job. You are supposed to drop the rear rack, but some have been able to do it without dropping it. The hard part is removing the crossover tube, especially if you have never done it. You can't see the point where the crossover tube connects to the tank to unlock the locking mechanism. I have tons of pictures of when I did it if you end up needing them. My pictures are of a 2005 C6, but it is the same as the 04 C5.
Check the fuel line connectors and the point where the crossover tube connects to the tank, there are several 0-rings in there and also two different plastics are welded together there and have been known to develop a crack where they are welded.
