There are tons of threads etc. You should do at same time as heads depending since it will most likely act as a combo. Do you want top end or mid range power etc?
With an auto first thing I would do is get a 4000 stall, makes a HUGE performance difference.
I have full exhaust and vararam intake. No other mods. Has 4l60e
I also plan on doing the edelbrock ligenfelder heads soon
Depends on what you want out of the car + what your bottom end will be willing to keep up and live with and for how long. I have a somewhat mild 232/238 114 LSA for my motor but it does everything I needed to do. See sig for page and link to vid.

H&C = try to get them done at the same time, save money, down time on the car, etc.
The 4000 stall- that may be a bit high for a H/C only car and the stock tranny. My combo with an RPM level V tranny and a 2900 stall is ok, I may go up to a 3200 in the future. This is fine and good for a street driven car.
Do it once and do it right. I have a G5X3 112lsa and it's considered a "big" cam. It's really all in the tune on how a cam acts. Sure it lopes hard but doesn't buck/surge or anything like that. Lots of power and I'm happy with it. I also have 3:73's/Yank SS3600 stall so traction is limited unless on a DR.
I would suggest doing your homework when choosing a cam. It all comes down to what your expectations are and what you can tolerate. Also, I would suggest doing the H/C in one shot since it would save a lot on labor.
Yes research cams as much as possible so you are not stuck with something you don't like and have to spend more money than necessary. The questions you need to ask yourself is:
How hard do you want it to lope? How loud do you want your car to be? How do you want your car to drive? Do you want power up top? Or down low? Do you drag race, road race, or street only? Is it daily driver or weekend warrior?
Too many variables for anyone to come in and say what cam you should have because there is hundreds of choices out there and only you can know what you want. Get on the phone with a forum vendor and discuss your plans and goals and let them steer you in the right direction.
Here is a suggestion, find a good reputable shop/builder-whoever is gonna do the work for you. Talk to someone in person, I had the shop doing my work introduce me to some of their customers. A couple of them took me for a ride in their cars to feel what their set up felt like on the road.
I went down a notch from what I experienced in the 1st car I rode in and I was happy. His cam and set up as a whole was a bit much for me and I wanted to keep my set up at a safe level of performance for me.
Alot of good info above. I say go to the local track and attend local corvette and F-body cruises and talked to few people and listen to idles and drive bye's etc. My usual advice on a cam is go big. You really do not wnat to say, Wish I would have put that bigger stick in. This what I did and I kick myslef. A cam swap is something that you only want to due once. A good tuner can make a big cam drive well.
FYI, there is a thread running about "What mod you would do different" and the majority of them say the same thing - they would have went with a bigger cam. Don't short yourself.
