Tom,

Do you know anyone close to Milwaukee that can do that? I am looking at heads/cam/FAST this winter. Not sure that I wanted to tackle the degree cam process! Thanks, Verne

Not aware of anyone local, but I never really looked into it either.

I sent my cam to Thunder Racing for this...They had it back to me in less than a week.

The dot-to-dot method is all you need IF the cam is ground to specs. Degreeing is only needed if you buy a cam that's NOT ground to specs. The Comp cams seem to have this problem alot. Not sure about other brands.

Interesting, but I still don't get it. Average cam cost $400..so what are you paying for if it's not ground to spec?

I did some asking around. As you know Comp has Many off the shelf cams Most have advance ground into the cam.. Like you said Lucky I would be very upset after paying 430 for a custom grind if it wasn't spot on,,

I recently changed my mind and want to move the power range down a tad .. I'm trusting its on spec but advancing it to a 110Ilc

BYE THE WAY ANYONE HAVE A A/C TENSIONER BOLT LAYING AROUND I SNAPPED MINE..
GM only sells it with the tensioner assembly 95.00..
Its on odd bolt with with a lip for a plastic washer not something i would find at the hardware store

When degreeing a cam you are checking the camshaft events that occur while it is innstalled in the engine, where those events occur with respect to the position of the pistons,it is usually not cams that are out but thee stacking of plus and minus tolerences of the timing chain cam & crank gear ,keyways in the crankshaft.S0me stock caamss were advanced F/emission purposes ,some perf. cams are also ground 4o advanced to make up f/wear in assembly and mfg. of cams figure most will be put in w/no degreeing and as componets wear cam retards .In most cases with all these areas where cams and componets could be out of whack its surprising that most cam assemblys come in right on or within acceptable limits.I always degree , i have done it 20 to 30 times most were right on only one or two were out but only off 2&4o

That was more of a rhetorical question. Lucky knows what's going on.

I did mine mostly because LG doesn't release specs at all, and I wanted to know exactly what I was putting in my car.

I always laugh at that when vendors don't release specs, cause you just send the cam out to be measured, and you know exactly what it is anyways. Anyone with the ability to measure, or have the cam analyzed, can copy the cam, in the end, it just ends up costing their customers more for the same end result.

When I checked my Comp cam with the stock 7500 mile timing gear it was advanced 1.5*. I went Crane Ultra whiz bang timing gear set with the 6 Allen bolts in the top gear....a bit more money.....has the whizzy thrust bearing......it is degreed perfectly. Yes degree the cam you do not want to second guess that issue. My dyno results are not as expected, I know what is not the problem.

I so much agree they keep the specs "secret" like it was the freakin' "A" bomb or something I'm gonna cam up my z/06 over the winter and I spoke to a respected corvette tuner and when asked the specs. he went into cloak and dagger mode, I told him, I'm not in the camshaft or tuning business, but I understand the relationship the cam has to the whole package and no way I'm putting a cam in W/O the specs just the appx duration @50 and the lift. The people they should be worried about ,other tuners have the means to check and find out the specs rather easy. When a vendor won't give specs. for a part purchased it makes me suspect they are being dishonest about something. When you go to an engine builder and request aan engine build they will tell you everything going into the engine ,now how many people run home and build a motor to that specs no many, likewise a cam spec request your talking to them to have them install your business should prosper because you provide a quality service not because they make you feel they have this special secret cam exclusively sorry to get off topic and rant like this it just pi##es me off like we're some kind of idiots that can't share in the decision making process and we should blindly follow. They should have no fear as the technology you purchase today is yesterdays technology as R&D should be ongoing and thats a quote from Warren Johnson when asked if he feared his ideas stolen from engines he sold to other pro stock teams

Besides the secrecy aspect, there is a bit of marketing at work for those who sell "soec-less" cams.

LG doesn't sell whole lot of cams to the LS1Tech crowd, why...because everyone there must know the specs (well that and they cost more than TSP ).

However, LG does sling a lot of cams to people on this forum, and they also often sway a lot of folks into a lot bigger cam than they might have otherwise considered, either directly or indirectly just based on overwhelmingly positive user reviews..

When there are no specs to look at, there is nothing to compare to, and what happens is that people's testimonials revolve solely around dyno numbers, track times, and ease of drivability. And those three things are the most important to most folks...even conservative folks who might otherwise be too shy to run something like a 234/242ish cam.

EnglandGreen is also developing quite a large number of customers on this board doing the exact same thing. He's giving the average Joe customer (who just wants his car to go a little faster without needing to be a pro engine builder) exactly what they want, and that makes for happy customers.

There's no harm in being a knowledgeable consumer, and perhaps you can spec your own cam better than anyone else, by all means do so, and buy it direct from the cam grinder and save a few $$. But do realize the majority of cam customers do not fit that profile....all they know is they want more, and when catering to those folks, It's amazing what a little mystery will do to capture and hold their attention.

For those that have a cam installed, just have the shop take a pic of the cam being degreed; It would be interesting to find out how many do it and/or if it's really common practice

I don't think it is(common practice)

Steve, I do believeyou are correct, I would say however if you're getting a complete engine rebuild,I would say you would get the cam degreed and the builder would just do it or recomend it be done ,but a cam swap,in chassis, I doubt it, but in all fairness it's probablly done(not degreed) as they probablly have used that grind, and that brand before with no probs, but degree on just a swapthat would be at least another hour labor and most have a set price, lets not forget it's also a PITA

On my first motor, I degreed the cam in the car. It was a pita and I found that it was dead nuts on. I think I had to use some washers to get the degree wheel in the space between the spring and the cradle.

Comp makes a special socket that goes over the oil dirve sprocket for the degree wheel, makes this job a snap.
