Default HIDs need a relay?

I got my HID kit from the auction site and although it looks plug-n-play it shows wiring in a relay? Is this necessary?

I used to have a set of xenon HID's in my 97 Vette, the one i had hooked into the stock system, and the other on the relay. the one hooked into the stock system worked mint, however the other side as always blew relays and eventually blew a balast. My relay would last roughly 2 days. I bought a second Balast, rewired the Relay, the same thing happened, so eventually i got fed up and took them out, and bought $4 again from walmart and havent had trouble. So i would just do the plug and play and hopefully save you the headaches

If your lights come on instantly when you first turn them on and when switching from high beams to low beams you do not need a relay. My first set of HID's worked great. After one ballast burned out I replace both. I had a problem with the new set. Often the drivers side light would not light on the first try and both were slow to come on when switching to low beams, with the drivers side some times not lighting at all. Running the power supply for the lights directly from the battery through a relay solved the problem.

Try it first with out the relay but be prepared to add a relay. You might want to think about adding a second relay to keep your low beams on when the high beams are switched on. It makes a world of difference.
