installing new cam, have a Q about why would i want to advance or retard the cam , or do i just set it to o. could someone explaine this to me please. thanks jim.
What does the cam card indicate? Most cams are installed in straight up 0* advance. Many cams actually have a small amount, up to 4*, of advance ground in. Supposedly to compensate for timing chain stretch over time which retards the cam slightly. Also the cam advance ground into the cams is also by design as most people will go with a cam to big instead of to small
Typically cams are installed advanced to improve lower rpm performance, This is generally a trade off of higher rpm performance. Also can be advanced to compensate for a cam that is to large for engine.
Things to be concerned with: If cam is of longer duration, PTVC is always of concern. If cam was designed to work with your setup and provide proper clearances, advancing or retarding your cam will change PTVC clearances.
Probably to much info but that is a kind of top line report on cam advance/retard!
