Default Service Engine Light

Every time I start my C5 the "Service Engine" message shows up in the DIC. No codes are shown, no check engine light. Once reset the message stasy of, and it stays off untill it is started again. When the engine is started the message comes up after about 10 seconds. The Oil Life has been reset, but the message continues to come up at each start.
Since I get no codes with the message, I'm lost as to what it can be.

Try seeing what code(s) you may have on the DIC. Turn the key to "on" but don't start the engine. Clear any messages. Hold the OPTIONS button down and press the FUEL button four times. That will cylce through all the modules and the codes. Their is a post here that lists all the codes and what they mean.

Know how to do that, but there are no historical codes that I do not know what they are.

What's interesting, is that "Service Engine" is not even listed as a possible warning message per the service manual.

From the Owner's Manual ... remember that thing?

DIC Warnings and Messages
SERVICE VEHICLE SOON: If this message appears
on the DIC, there may be an electrical or another system
problem with your vehicle. Have your vehicle checked
by your dealer if this message keeps appearing.

That's all it says ...

Yeah sweetie, it does make a difference. I spent some time looking through the service manuals, trying to find that message.....so I spent some more time, trying to determine if it some how could be year specific, etc. If you want exact help, then be exact.

So, you ask...."does it really make any difference at this point? "

Nope, not to me.....figure it out yourself.....

I am posting below the only messages that can appear on the DIC. For each message there is a reference to what subsystem is involved. The list should show you the reason you have to be exact. Service Engine Soon is not one of those messages. It only shows up as Check Engine Light on the instrument panel.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the service vehicle comes on at periodic intervals for scheduled maintenance items. I had one come on at 98k on another car I had and it was for replacement of plugs, wires and some other things. The mechanic shut it off after they serviced it and it never returned.

Could it be a mileage thing?
