I was wondering if the Corvette HUD is a stand alone unit. What I mean, is it possible to install it into another car if I were able to give it speed and RPM signals?
Thanks in advance,
Tony
As far as I know, Nippon Seiki is the manufacturer of the Corvette HUD. Their consumer products division is called Defi. Defi manfactures universal HUD devices that will work in all cars including speedometer/tach HUDs, Boost and Timer HUDS to Field Compass HUDs.
If I am not mistaken, in order to see the HUD image on the windshield, the windshield was designed with the purpose in mind. I think that it'S probably not even worth the expense in doing that IMHO...
I think you are supposed to have some sort of metal film in the windshield in order to see the image. I have a ZR1 windshield in my car, which has metal film in it, so I wonder if that will allow me to see the image.

The C5 HUD windshield has a scientifically adjusted safety layer sandwiched between the glass to prvide a sharp image. In addition, the C5 HUD windshield is actually slightly thicker at the top, creating a wedge, which is very important to the clarity of the system.
However, those Defi aftermarket HUDs come with a layer you apply on the inside of your windshield to properly reproduce the image for their HUD projected display.
There was a post just a few days back where someone installed a HUD in a 99 pre-HUD car?. He got the parts from a wrecked car except that the wire harness is not the same on his parts and his dash. Do a search on this and read his comments. He didn't change out the windshield and says the image is just fine.
I was the guy who just installed a Hud in my 99 coupe my friends that own vettes with the Hud from the factory tell me that they cannot see the difference in the non- Hud windshield it looks just as clear but it will not adapt to another car unless you have the proper wire harness and the correct cluster. The only difference from the Enginneers who designed the system from one windshield to the other is one-extra layer of film, other than that it looks the same. I hope this answers some of the questions. :)
This subject has been talked about several times. Also, I installed a HUD in my 99 Grand Prix GTP (HUD was an option I just didn't have it) and it worked FINE. I didn't have the "special" windshield. Over on the Grand Prix forum LOTS of people have done this and not one complaint.
If you want to do this on a 97 or 98 you need the gauge cluster from a 99+. Other than that you need:
(prices from GMPARTSDIRECT)
Swicth (about $62.02)
HUD projector ($637.73)
Dash plate (about $25, couldn't find part #)
