I just got towed back from the track tonight. I managed only one pass then I had this happen:
I was launching the car at 3500 rpms and did not make it out of the hole. I came off the clutch and bam. So now I need to upgrade and want to know who makes the strongest case out there. This rear end was a built up DTE unit completed with the billet side cover.
It was the equivalent of a Stage 5 built in my old case. So say it is a 4+ since it was lacking a new case.
Hmmm. I popped for a new 3 rib case when I upgraded. I don't know if it would have helped with your particular failure or not. Until DTE finishes the cast iron case, I think the current offerings from DTE and RPM are about as good as you're gonna get. Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I would just call them and let them evaluate it.
i dont get it, i see posts from two guys on this board that side step the clutch at 5500 rpms and dont break their rear end...and others leave 3k and theirs breaks...both have hardened shafts, dte brace etc...so what gives???
If you are really that worried, convert to a C6 Z06 rear. You need to change the rear diff (obviously), the rear cradle and lower control arms (everything else will swap over) and the rear casing of your transmission needs to be changed as well.

What kind of diff is the C6 Z06? Who to get it from?

Not much for them to evaluate. They will not warranty stuff from racing. So I am just going to GM and buying another Z06 rear.
I think there is. Why did it break? What was the nature of the failure, and could it be prevented. I'm sure DTE would be able to offer some insight that might help for your next choice. Just a suggestion...
I would say it is the 1 rib case based on feeling around for that vent on the driver's side.
I thought the stock differential case for a Z06 was a 3 rib? Anyway I still don't understand why a built DTE rear with billet side cover and DTE brace would just split like this...

Same here. Well, this rear end was exchanged so I never thought to look at the ribs. I originally bought my DTE from LG motorsports about 3 years ago and sent them my original as a core.
Clearly he is not, he just blew his rear in half! He was stating that to convert to a C6 Z06 rear the mainshaft needs to be changed.

The stock differential case for a Z06 is a 3 rib, unless he specified he wanted a 3 rib when it was built he probably got the cheaper one.

Aaaand that explains it. If you don't want to go insane with the C6 Z06 version, have a 3 rib case done up for you!
Here is a side by side pic of the C5 VS C6Z cases/mainshaft. And I personally think you can break any of them depending on how the car leaves the line !
