Default Unlocking steering wheel with no chip key...

i bouhgt 99' frc, the battery was died. the stearing wheel is locked. the previous owner told me that stearing colum lock recall was performed. i called chevy and they confirmed that there is no recall needed to be done and the girl confirmed about two colum lock recalls performed on my car. I have only this valet key bellow. my plan was turn the ignition lock to on position and disable vats with hp tuners to start the car, cause i have no ignition key. but now i stuck. i can open doors glovebox but i wont turn the ignition lock, the stearing wheel is locked. where you think is the problem here. thanks

Take your registration and ID to the dealer. They will make you a new key. There is no other option. You won't find anyone on a forum board to tell anyone how to bypass security in our cars. Someone may use it to steal a car.

See my post #45 in your other thread.

Good luck in your quest. I think that you must go through proper channels to get the correct ignition key through the dealer.

Not sure why the steering wheel is locked the non-chipped key (it isn't a valet key) will allow you to turn the ignition lock but will not allow the car to start. I doubt HP Tuners will help you as the BCM controls the antitheft logic and sends signals to the PCM over the data bus. After shorting out the Antitheft Deterrent Relay you would have modify the PCM code so it would turn on the the fuel injectors in the absence of a correct message from the BCM. This means patching software and isn't the same as modifying tables to get a different tune.

thanks for your answer, so who i have to believe now, the guy before said its not possible to turn ignition lock to "on" position with my key, you said its possible, so the problem should be in the colum lock then. i have to figure out how to unlock it, service recall was performed, so here i have no clue. if i would get that key to "on" position then i probably could relink VATS on PCM. i found this information in the foloving thread, please tell me if im wrong here......

http://www.hptuners.com/forum/showth...highlight=vats :
Relink VATS

This feature allows the VCM to relink with the vehicles security system. It is only required on vehicle fitted with Serial VATS systems. It can be used when a new PCM is used in a vehicle or after reflashing a new operating system into a PCM from a different vehicle.

Procedure
To relink the VCM with the BCM please use the following steps:

Plug the interface cable into the vehicle OBD2 port and PC serial/USB interface. See Connecting to the Vehicle section for more information.
Open VCM Editor and select "Relink VATS" from the "Flash" menu. The Relink VATS form will appear.
Put the key in the ignition and turn to the ON position (do not start the vehicle).
Wait 10 to 15 seconds.
Press the Commit button when ready.
Wait for the procedure to complete.
Turn Ignition off for 30 seconds.
Turn Ignition on for 30 seconds.
Turn Ignition off for 30 seconds.
Turn Ignition on for 30 seconds.
The vehicle has now relinked the VCM to the BCM.

Relink VATS Rules
The following checks are in place when using the Relink VATS function:

You can relink VATS on vehicles with serial VATS system.
You can relink VATS on any vehicle supported by HP Tuners.
You do not need an individual license for the vehicle.[/QUOTE]

OK, the non-chipped key should turn in the ignition if it is cut correctly.

The column lock is a motor controlled by the BCM that is unlocked when the key is turned on. Not positive but I would assume the BCM needs to also see the correct key pellet vefore unlocking the column. The column lock has nothing to do with the ignition cylinder - the column lock locks the steering wheel.

Changing the lock cylinder will not allow the car to start. I believe there is a procedure similar to what you posted to re-link the security to a new key.

The PASSkey pellet can be figured out with a resistor decade box or a test box from GM (or buying the correct resistors). I've figured the key pellet out a few times for a friend who buys cars at the smashed action and they don't come with keys. There are just something like 15 different resistor values.

After reading the door lock cylinder coding note in the service manual, we need to see a picture of that "courtesy key."

My '02 service manual says, Ign lock uses 10 tumbler positiond and for the door locks only require positions 6 through 10. That would be the 5 positions closest to the tip of the key. So my guess is Timemender is correct.

To verify what I mentioned in my above post I just taped over the key for my car and tried it out in the car. With tape covering the chip the key will turn the ignition lock but it will not unlock the column.

I do know the courtesy key on my 97 would turn the ignition lock.
