Default please advise about check engine light

Last weel I had a VR and a Carbon Fiber power duct installed. Sunday the check engine light came on and the code was P 0171H. I took the car to the dealership and they found nothing so they reset it. The same code came on today and my local performance shop told me not to worry about it and they will tune it out when i do my headers later on this week. What should I do and Is it safe to drive the car?

Here's the description of your code:
P0171 Fuel Trim System Lean bank 1-B The (h) means it's happened, but is not currently happening. You would see ( h c ) if it was continually happening.

I'm not sure what to say, but it seems to be stemming from your mods directly due to the extra cold airflow. I'm not sure how to help, maybe someone else will chime in..

Just so you don't have to visit the dealer every time you want to check/erase codes here's a link with instructions.... the beauty of a C5 is that you can check and erase right on your instrument panel.

The best link possible to check/erase C5 codes: http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/corvet...they-mean.html

Ps... when they "tune it out" it means that they are simply going to stop that code from reporting..... doesn't mean the sensors can't still see a problem, it just wont report to the gauge cluster... kind of a "digital redneck" way of solving it...

There are tons of little "codes" I can tune out of my '01, but solving the problem is better than silencing the symptoms.

Something like this isn't critical, but I've seen shops (bad tunes) where important things like knock and map sensors are taken completely off the chart... not good when something really goes wrong.

thanks, that what I thought to when they told me that they would tune it out. What are some ways that I can tell if thier tuner knows what he is doing?

I've had that problem before and it can be tuned out one of two ways. The first is to prevent it from reporting, the second is to change the fuel map to compensate for the extra air.

I would side with changing the MAP values due to your increased air flow as opposed to preventing it from reporting. Also, don’t discount the possibility that you have an leak in your new induction system allowing unmetered air into the system between the MAF and TB.

I agree 100% Check and recheck the install and MAKE SURE that you do not have any air leaks between the MAF and intake. Also check the PVC lines and hoses for cracks and leaks.

The goal is to adjust the TUNE to suit your new air flow to make the most power and fuel economy.
