I was thinking of sending my rotors out to be powder coated by one of the CF vendors. I was wondering if, after I receive them back, is it a good idea to rebuild them, or is it even necessary? My "03" has less than 30K on it.
IF I do decide to rebuild them, how much money are we talking about? I've never done this before, and I'm guessing that all I'm replacing is the seals, correct? I would want to buy OEM, or better, seals.
Thanks
PS..
Pushing my luck, but if anyone knows the part number(s) for the seal kits, and any other parts I may have overlooked...I sure would appreciate the info.
At 30K I wouldn't think they'd need a rebuild. I just did a rebuild on my 206K Acura and it wasn't that bad...Be warned that the rebuild is a little tricky (at least it was on the Acura)..
A rebuild usually consist of replacement of the pressure seals and dust boots. Also polishing the bore and the piston is reccommended, but again, a rebuild is not likely justifiable at 30K miles...
i thought that part of the powder coating process, the painted item would have to be heated in a large oven. does the painter remove the seals before painting and reassemble after painting? i cant imagine the rubber seals and boots would hold up to those kind of heats.

That's the question that really needs to be answered..
IF the person doing the powder coating remeoves them, then I guess they can be re-assembled and re-used. I'm just not sure if I want to re-use them inspite of the low mileage.
The only benefit of powder coating is the ability to pick a "custom" color...
One last question: Does powder coating impede heat dissipation??
Thanks....
The more important question might be the expertise of the powder coating employee who disassembles the brake components, then reassembles them after the process. He might have formally been a fry cook at McDONALD'S.
If in doubt, DIY or have someone knowledgeable do it for you, then reassemble after the process. I think I'd lean towards new components as far as seals if it were me.
Powder coating is probably a lot more than picking a "custom" color to most enthusiasts...it's more about durability of the finish.
I'm not a powder coating expert, but have had a number of engine components, chassis components, body components, etc powder coated through the years.
I doubt that powder coating impedes heat dissipation to any noticeable degree. Look at all of the engine components and brake components that come standard in powder coating from every automotive manufacturer as well as after market sources. Some sources are even powder coating intake manifolds now...
