I was at pep boys replacing the thermostat on my 88 boneville, and when i picked it up all the thermostats were $7...they are very simple looking pieces. My question is...is there a difference between the ones at pep boys and the ones of the vette...they look identical and the only difference i can see is $60
they ARE different indeed. Of course, I am not to judge, if the higher amount to pay for our thermostats in the C5 is well-founded. But if you look at the one you have in your car, you will find that this thermo is built as an integral unit, means thermo plus complete housing plus a hose connection plus an integral o-ring.
I recommend you, if necessary (you might judge this) to purchase one from BREATHLESS PP. Depending to your application and location, decide between 160° and 178°. Any exchange is an easy weekend project. I personally use an 160° along with the HPP3-software. This allows programming of both the fans kick-in earlier. The result is great in all conditions of driving. You certainly go with me, when I say: spirited driving means also keep your engine nicely cool - or more precisely, lower oil temp and coolant temp is the way to go.
You didn't say what the generics were rated temp-wise, but if getting a lower temp is your wish, then they are different. The metal that expands and contracts to close and open the coolant valve is different depending on that rating. Another question is whether or not a generic would fit into the C5's housing properly. In addition, the longevity rating may differ...
For me, sixty bucks isn't high enough cost to look at a homemade alternative that you know isn't specified for your car. The price isn't really inhibitive, and it's too important a component to use a cheap generic...JMHO
If a $10.00 t-stat works in my C4 why won't it work in my C5 ? Home made...not quite. It's just using what's practical. The only difference I see is that one is secured to the housing and one is not. This is something to facilitate easier installation , not improve function. :smash: :smash: :smash:
Getting the $10 one is not being cheap if it is the same thing without the word corvette stamped in the side...Its just not being a sucker like paying $110 for a c5 oil change...Or paying $10 for a $5 quart of oil at a mobil station cause you drove up in a viper :mad
