When I was internally stock, fumes were nearly non-existent. Standing directly behind the car, you could smell it, yes...driving it? no, not offensive at all.
With a 20* overlap cam, the best tuning in the world can't prevent it, and is strong enough to be noticeable even inside the car.
Fortunately, I embrace it. A little VP110 leaded mixed in sweetens up the smell even more.
AGE 22. HCI LT's No cats ti exhaust. With the TI exhaust its pretty tame I wanted a little more wild rip. Cats would make it non existant.. For most older guys they would love the way the car sounds outside with no noise inside.
Yes you can smell the fumes inside the car, when its rolling you can smell nothing and its entirely bearable. Even with me being a coupe and the roof removed is ok coming to stops for a short period of time. Heavy gridlocked interstate traffic is another thing.
Sometimes it gets pretty extreme smelling like raw fuel at times. I could see how this could cause a problem.
Its not so much the cats making horsepower as they kill a good exhaust tone. The corvette is already challenged to sound good and not motorboat to begin with. The 4.6 mustangs sound very good without cats and a simple flowmaster.
Its just not so easy to make these LSX sound as good. With a cam and no cats my car actually has a rumble to it that was non existant with cats.

I agree, the cats tame it down a lot as far as sound quality.
I used to run with no cats and LT's but went to magnaflow hi-flows for smog.
I checked the "fumes but live with" box but to be honest I didn't really notice them...other car is a 68 Camaro w/406 small block 11.1 to 1 iron heads...
There are a little more noticeable fumes in that car so I never really realized them in the Vette but friends had asked "what's that smell?" while riding or standing behind the car....

I agree No cats + Stock = Little to no fumes
No cats + H/C = fumes
