When I was at the track this past Thursday, had 2 things happen that I'd never seen before ......one was "active hanlding warming up", no big deal :)
The other however, gave cause for concern .....it was the dreaded "pull key, wait 10 seconds"
I had been in the staging lanes and learning as "young pups" will, I saw people, in an attempt to help keep engine temps down, blip the gas peddle and turn the car off as the coast up.
So I did the same and that's when it happend, I went to start the car back up and got the message.....my heart started racing as I pulled the key, waited a few seconds, then put the key back in, turned the car over and winced....
All was well, as you coulda guessed....all I did was brag about my times since then and if the column lock had happened, y'all woulda hear about it :mad
So I guess it's time to spend the $60 and be done with it, the gremlin barely missed me and I'm not gonna get caught a second time :)
last time I looked my vin was outside the range and I've heard some people still having problems after the dealer fix, but maybe I can try.....I never did pull codes :)
Re: Column Lock Close Call....EEK! (Mean Green 2000)
Try this if it locks. It has worked for me in the past.
Pull the key all the way out of the ignition. Next with your right hand
strike the right side of the steering wheel once or twice. Put the key in
and try it again. If it still does not unlock pull the key and repeat.
Re: Column Lock Close Call....EEK! (Mean Green 2000)
I always thought "pull key" was a security system message, not a column lock message. I think it comes from the computer not properly recognizing the resistor pellet in the key, either because it is dirty or damaged.
Mark, don't you dare take that beast to the dealership :boxing install it yourself or I will bet you can find a fellow member nearby that can help you.
Yellow.....oh, I'll install it myself, no way a dealer is getting their hands on my baby for this issue

really, I was under the impression this was the prelude message to the column lock.....
Re: Column Lock Close Call....EEK! (Mean Green 2000)
I'm not sure that what happenned was the column lock problem. Rather, I think it is just some type of safeguard  (or most likely quirk) with the electronics.
I had something similar happen to me once as well; almost the exact same conditions (moving, then shutting off the car and coasting). I thought the same thing as well (*&^% dealer time). However, with the key on, my column was free. I pulled the key, counted to 30 and tried to restart. It fired right up and life was normal. Since then, I have not done the "roll and shut off while moving manuever" and never had the situation repeat nor a column lock problem.
Re: Column Lock Close Call....EEK! (Mean Green 2000)
John....do you have the bypass installed?
nice color btw :D
Thanks Mean Green 2000! We just love the color ourselves :D
I do not have the bypass; basically bone stock except for the list in my sig (i actually had the CAGS bypass in my hand before the car showed up - the wife was so impressed  )
Re: Column Lock Close Call....EEK! (Mean Green 2000)
Mark,
If it had locked on you at the track, I would have saved you.. It happened to me 7 months ago in my garage, but I knew what fuse to pull and it worked fine after that..:)
Does your VIN number not fall in under the Cheby cl recall?
Which fuse is that? BTW anyone know what vin numbers are covered...I have a 98 and had a 97 before this that it happened too. I don't want it to happen again.
Re: Column Lock Close Call....EEK! (Mean Green 2000)
Likely you got the message because you turned the key twice before the lock had time to cycle. It's documented in the owner's manual. The BCM has to reset in order to be certain of the lock position.
Also, I think Tom stopped making the CLB when GM came out with the recall. I'll have one available later in the week, since my car is in the shop, & one of the things being done is the factory bypass.

Mean Green 2000,
A defective steering column lock immobilized my 1999 C5 coupe while my wife and I were on vaction, out-of-state. We were stranded.
I can not describe the feeling of seeing my C5 hauled away on a flatbed wrecker. The car was fixed under the new car warranty, but my wife and I were stranded for three days and the end of our vacation was ruined.
Chevrolet was well aware of the column lock problems and I'll never forget it.
