Note that on my 03, the drain valve is white plastic and has a square 1/4" recessed depression (my 03 manual "says" it was suppose to be a slot, like for a flat blade screwdriver). Use a 1/4" socket extension to engage it, and twist it CCW 1/4 turn. Then the valve needed to be pulled rearward about 1/16" for the coolant to come out the bottom drain.
And do not remove the surge tank cap if the engine is hot! This is essentially a radiator cap, and un-pressurizing the tank can cause the previously pressurized coolant to erupt into scalding water.

I think that you should do the initial drain and mess with the damm plug when everything is cold! When you turn the plug out a quarter turn it has to be pulled out a bit, and it could come all the way out. So, if its hot, you can figure that it could ruin your day.
Do further searchs also and get the better plug (with the tab on it). Then, when you do the re-install you will be set up real well in the futhre.
I assume that you have ramps which will allow you to see whats what.
