Default C% parking brake.

My parking brake needs adjusting as it no longer holds the vehicle. Does anyone know how to do this? Thx

You might do well by using the search function... I think this has been covered a couple of times.

There are two adjustment 'wheels' for teh parking brake... one in each rear parking brake assembly. (Left and right.) They are actuated by a lever when you pull on the parking brake... so they should automatically adjust when you pull the handle.

Unfortunately, they don't always work that way.

You can remove the rear wheels, calipers, brackets, and rotors to adjust them manually... but be careful. The parking brake shoe can hang up on the inside drum (in the disc) and pull the shoes off. Getting it off after that is a HUGE PITA!

After removing the rotors, you can manually adjust the shoes such that they are just barely touching the drum as you slide them back on. Then reassemble your car and pull the handle.

But here is the catch: Sometimes, the problem is that the cables have stretched and the parking brake doesn't adjust at all, or even engage, really. That takes a cable adjustment... on a cable that has NO adjustment at all. (Thanks, GM!)

There is another thread that is talking about this right now... hopefully those guys can shed some more light on the subject.

The PARKING BRAKE LEVER has the ability to keep tension on the cable (if it works correctly. It has a cam that maintains the adjustment BUT,,,its limited in how much it can adjust,,,,,,The actual parking brake adjustment wheel (inside the drum) needs to be adjusted every now and then.

You need to REMOVE the drum to gain access to that star wheel to make the master adjuatment.

I agree with all above. Do it the "old school way" and it'll work as long as you didn't leave the parking brakes on and burn the shoes off.

You're right guys... I'm a bonehead.

There isn't a 'self-adjust' function inside the parking brake drum. I was getting it confused with a typical GM rear brake drum assembly... kinda like this one:

I had to go back to my factory manual to make sure... I mean, I KNOW I saw one in there.... right?

WRONG.

Sorry for the confusion.
