Default Transmission Noise

Hi,

I have a 2001 Convertible 6 speed manual. I hear a whining noise coming from, I believe the transmission when the car is in gear and im accelerating. It does not whine when I take my foot off the gas. Car seems to perform and shift perfectly. Any thoughts???

Thanks

OK, now is the pitch sound of the whine changing from gear to gear as you accellerate? If it is staying at nearly the same pitch but only changing as you go faster, in other words, Not Gear Related, then I would start with the differential fluid. Find out if you still have any in there and if not, get some in there before driving it any farther. I believe its 1.7 Quarts of 70W90 gear oil with 4 ozs of Limited slip additive. There is a possibility that you broke a tooth in there.
Again, find out if the pitch of the sound is gear related or not. That will tell you if its in the transmission or differential.

Thanks it seems to make the whine in all gears only when my foot is on the gas. If I take my foot off no more noise. Seems to get louder as RPM's increase. The car only has 25,000 miles any further thoughts?

Thanks SO Much

Look at the diff. first. The PO of my '99 put a 4.10 in with Chinese gears. Had the exact same symptoms. Changed it out with a GOOD 3.90 and it runs nice and quiet.

Oh, it was supposed to be 75W90 gear oil not what I said. Sorry about that. That "Pitch" of the whine is important as it will tell you if its gear related or differential related. Its not an absolute as you could have a broken tooth on the main output shaft in the transmission which I hope you don't have either.. its like a $2700 repair for that alone. So, back to the "whine". Lets say you are in 4th gear at a constant speed therefore a load on the throttle. You can hear the whine at a certain pitch. Now if you change to 5th gear, is the whine the same "pitch" in sound or did the pitch of the sound suddenly go lower?

seems to be the same noise and pitch in all the gears. The trans seems to shift perfectly and doesn't do anything stange at all.

OK, then take a close look at the differential first.

Do you think it is fluid related or the whole differential. Does the dealer have the right gear oil, or is there a better brand to use? thanks

The dealer will have it for sure and they will recomend using two bottles of limited slip fluid. You can do it yourself with a cheap fluid pump if you are going to change it. Its a bit messy, but if you are careful, it can be done. I'm curious to find out how much was still in it, therefore do you have a bad seal? Any evidence of it leaking out? If so, it won't do a lot of good without fixing the seal too. If you aren't mechanically inclined, take it to a professional Corvette shop if you have one nearby or else do your homework on the dealers around the area and make sure they know what they are doing. They are going to charge you the max price per hour and out here, that's like $92 an hour right now.

By the way, a "new" differential via the dealer should cost about $1600 to buy and install if it becomes needed.
