Default sleeper/stealth/sneaky cam???

Hey guys. I've done quite a bit of searching, and haven't really found a good answer on the performance of these cams. I know that they generally add around 20-30hp with a tune on the dyno, but what gain at the track are people seeing? Most threads only talk about peak hp numbers, and I'm interested in anybody that has et results and mph results at the track with one. I don't really care about bragging rights.

I use a custom cam with 215/220@.050, lsa 113 and very high lift (.600/.609) in a LS1. I don't have any dyno numbers yet but it has awesome low end and midrange power and pulls strong to my 6200 redline. Idle is close to stock with a slight hint of a lope. In combination with my PP 243 heads it is a very powerful cam for a daily driver.

I have a 218/224 cam (see specs in my sig.) and it idles like stock.I installed the cam and heads together so I can only tell you what I gained with the H/C combo.

My et went from 12.1 to 11.4 and my trap speed went from 114 mph to 121 mph.

You might look at Comcam's web site; go to the magazine articles, look under GM section: "3 LS1 cams tested". They compare 3 cams, starting with a very mild 212/218. I installed this cam cause I wanted strong torque with stock driveability and reliability, and wasn't planning on installing headers, or going beyond 6000 RPM. This tiny cam outperformed the other larger cams up to 5500 and made more torque through the entire band. I sure got what I wanted - 355 RWHP, 355 RWTQ, with 25 lbs more than the stocker way down at 2500 rpm.

If you're going to add more mods, like headers and heads, then a cam this small will limit the engine, but for a near-stock motor, anything much bigger is overkill.

thanks for the replies guys.

I am still looking for stealth/cheater/ninja/sleeper cam results at the track. I enjoy reading articles, but over the years, I have become skeptical of what they put out.

I figured that if I can get .2-.3 tenths at the track and 2-3mph(1/8 mile track) and retain most of the reliability/idle/drive ability of a stock car, then that is worth much more to me than a bigger cam. I'm looking for a cam that will put me in the 95-96mph range with just a cam, headers, intake, tb, and a tune.

Thanks again for the replies, lets keep it going.

Mark

cheatr cam from TR will give you 100% stock drivability and idle w/o even tuning it. Cant even tell it is there w/ OEM exhaust system.

thanks Yank,

for those of you that have posted cam specs and info. Thanks for reply, however, I have to admit, I really don't a lot of experience with pushrod motors and cam specs. Mod motor 2v cam specs with 2 overhead cams are much different. I have no idea what a small cam and large cam is on these cars.

224/224 581/581 114 comp cam

or 224/228 581/588 144 comp cam
two very good coman cams

Look for something in that range to be a good performer but semi quite

I run a 224/224 581/581 112 great power, but I also have LTs, and open exhaust.

Here is a cam guide for a little light reading

The TR 224 is
Thunder Racing Custom Camshaft
"TR 224-112" - 224/224 .563/.563 112 LSA 1700-6600 RPM Power Band. Excellent mid-range & high RPM power. Requires computer tuning on automatic transmission cars. Due to the fast ramp rate of this camshaft, the use of 1.8 rockers is not recommended.

I would not call that a sleeper at all

Thanks! That really helps. For anybody that only knows overhead cam motors ,like myself, with mustangs, it's a learning curve.
