Default Serpentine Belt Chirp

Car: '98 Corvette conv. A4
Mileage: 40k original
Problem: Belt chirp

Cure: replaced OEM belts with new OEM belts; still chirp
Cure: replaced tensioner pulley and idler pulley; still chirp

Problem diagnosis by my Forum brothers? GM belts? C5 pulleys? WTF??? Service appointment to get fixed [again] this Monday, 12/08.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I got the "chirp" last summer at 62K miles on my '98 coupe. Put on a GatorBack belt from Kragen's that cured it. I only replaced the alternator/water pump accessory belt. Did you replace the a/c belt too? If you didn't, perhaps the chirp is only from that belt. It's harder to replace than the access. belt, but not bad!

Good luck.....

Yep, replaced both belts with GM belts and both pulleys (a/c tensioner/idler) with GM units.

I, too, cured my belt chirp by replacing the crank pulley.

My '98 chirped. Thought it was the upper tensioner. Replaced the pulley, still chirped. Replaced both belts with Gatorbacks 6 months ago. No chirp since.

Can purchase gatorbacks from Auto Zone. Don't have an answer to your questions regarding purchase and installation of smaller belts.

The chirp was the first indication that my balancer was coming loose and moving foward.

Got them at AutoZone.

For a '98, The A/C belt (42") is Goodyear #4040420 -$17, and the Alt/PS belt (80.25") is #4060802 -$33.

Also, for a "00, the Alt/PS belt (79.875") is #4060798 -$28.

I'll check this evening to see which Alt/PS belt I used and advise.

My squeek was resolved with replacing number 9, 10, and 2 for really bad wobble. Crank balancer pulley separation.

I put a slightly smaller belt on my daughter's '99 Coupe and sister-in-law's '98 Conv 4 years ago and the chirp never came back. It's amazing what a difference a couple of mm makes.

My '98 chirps when engine and outdoor temp are really hot, but goes away in park or neutral.
