Default Has anyone done an electrical Keyless entry components Receiver replacement?

The keyless entry remote device on my car started going south a few years ago and I would basically have to reprogram the car to the keyless remote every 2-3 days. It was $450 or so to replace 3+ years ago so I just limped along (probably $600 by now) Well now it doesn't work at all. I have to remotes and both have new batteries and will not align with the alarm\remote entry component. My question is....has anyone done this themselves? If so is it tough or plug and pray? Otherwise I gotta take it in.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You will want to double check this but I believe this is how it works.

I think it's the BCM module under the passenger footwell. I've removed it from my 1999 to troubleshoot an issue.

Take a look down there. I think that's what controls all your IPC, Lights, Alarm, Keyless entry, TPMS, etc.

There are two versions of the BCM as well. If you go a different version than the car has on it you'll have to replace the fobs and TPMS sensors.

version 1: 1997-1000
version 2: 2001-2004

Hopefully that was helpful. And no they're a peicce of cake to swap out. basically remove the footwell, unplug it, put the new one in, program the fobs.

Done.

My guess is though you're fobs are just wearing out. You should try a new one before going to that length. You can also try cleaning the ones you have... to do this:

1. get rubbing alcohol
2. take fob apart and remove battery.
3. place peices in rubbing alcohol for 10 minutes or so.
4. remove them and let them air dry
5. put it back together.
6. reprogram it and test it.

I did that with mine and it seemed to do the trick as I was having same troubles.

Just e-mail forum vendor Gene Culley at GMpartshouse and buy a fob for your 2000 for $59. That's what he was charging last time I checked. It's very common for the 2000 to do just what you describe. Do a search and you'll be amazed how many with 2000 models have your exact symptoms and buying the new remote fob fixed them up. Don't buy one for the 2001 and up, they won't work on your car. Ask for the 2000.

Copied this from Gene's site. Part number and price.

My local O'reilly's and the Chevy dealer both have a key FOB tester and will test for free.

Ah, it's not the FOBs that are messed up. It's the component inside the car that receives transmissions from the FOB that is fried.

Based on the price that sounds like the part. Has anyone replaced it? Tough?

How do you know that's bad? Do the tire pressure sensors work? It's the same receiver.

The tire pressure sensors still work. It started losing it's programming with the FOBs every few days about 3 years ago. Dealership held the car a few days to monitor\troubleshoot the behavior and said it was the module in the car that was bad. Damage was around $400+ and since I always kept the car in the garage I didn't get it replaced. Now it does not work at all and you can't sync the FOBs with it at all.

If you'll borrow a fob from someone who has a 98, 99 or 2000 and try the retraining procedure through the DIC, I really think it will work. The 2000 fobs are famous for doing just what you describe. The tire sensor is exactly the same circuitry, just a different frequency. It might save you some money if you try to borrow one and train it first.

Okay, I'll give it a run. I have two FOBs and have not tried the other one which is virtually brand new. Is the key here a new FOB with a different frequency or just a new FOB?

Different fob. It has to be the type used by the 98, 99, 2000. The smaller 2001 and up won't work. If you have the correct one for your car, you're set. The 98 99 have a passive switch that won't work with the 2000, but the remote functions will still work. Run through the training on the DIC, and if the fob is good, you should be fine. If the tire sensors work, it's pretty much certainly the fob. Post what you find out.

Go on ebay, you can find fobs for $39.95 for two. The fob is most likely the prob.

I took a new FOB and tried to train it via the DIC. No dice... I held the lock\unlock buttons down on the new one and the old one for a minute each. Nothing..... I used to have to resync every three days....now that doesn't work anymore at all.

NO, you can't train a new fob this way. You can only resynch a fob that has been previously trained this way.

Look in your owner's manual or go to fob training or learning on DIC options. Be aware that you have to retrain all your fobs at once for them to work.

Read my post again. Don't buy the ones this guy is talking about, they won't work on a 2000. You won't find two or even one for $39.95 for the 2000. Follow the procedure in the manual to retrain your fob by using the DIC on the car. Not resync.
If you need to buy a fob, Gene Culley has them for $59. I haven't seen new GM fobs for the 2000 anywhere cheaper. Please try a fob before you buy a receiver. If you don't have an owner's manual, search for fob retraining here on the forum. The procedure has been posted several times. I believe Gene offers free download of owner's manuals, too.
Again, borrow a fob and try training before you buy. It won't mess up the guy's fob for his car and you'll know for sure.

"Look in your owner's manual or go to fob training or learning on DIC options."

I did this and went through the relearning process not the resyncing process. I did this with a new FOB for a 2000 and it would not relearn.

Do you know anyone with a 98-2000 Vette that will let you borrow one long enough to see if it will work with your car? It won't change his programming on his car and it will tell you for sure.

You are correct, I am wrong. The ones I am referring to are for an 01 and up. Sorry.
