OK so all of my gauges are dead except for the fuel level. The security light stays permanently on instead of blinking now and the DIC just gives some garbled up combo of letters. It's done this before as I'll be driving and the needles will lay down for a second, then come back to normal. Sometimes it'll read "HIGH VOLTAGE" afterwards.
Normally just driving it or unplugging the battery for a minute will bring everything back but it's toast now.
Is this a wiring problem or do I need a new cluster altogether?
kinda looks like bad connection-I'd lean towards ignition switch.
You could install an multimeter (V) to the fuse for the DIC circuit and have it on the passanger seat for monitoring.I'd bet that your voltage fluctuates big time....
Hmmm...I'll have to try it out. I've known ignition switches to cause some weird problems on other cars. Could the fuse be bad but still intact enough to provide electricity?
Towards the end of the drive, all of the warning lights turned off and the needles moved to their normal positions(ie they work). However, there's no backlightlighting and the DIC still gives me random junk.
Start with the obvious.. check the status of the battery voltage, battery connections and battery to starter connection. If you can catch the DIC working, try pulling the codes while you can. Next, look at the BCM and make sure its dry...no water dripping onto/into it. Also, wiggle the ignition key and so on...you may have a bad ignition switch. Check Bill Curlee's posts on it and while I'm thinking about his posts, check the accordian tube in the door for a possible shorting wire to the frame. Again, look at Bill's posts for a real nice picture about that.
Drove around again today and of course...everything returns back to normal. The DIC read perfect when I turned the car on and the lights turned on in the middle of the drive.
Obviously there's something wrong down the line or this car just has a mind of its own.
