Need some help/opinions. '01 M6 stock motor with Z06ti Exhaust. Last year, I mistakenly shifted from 3rd to 2nd (intended 4th) at about 80-85 MPH. Engine over-revved and tires chirped. I immediately pushed in the clutch and braked. Engine ran smoothly and quietly after that. (i.e. no strange noises).
I stored the car over last winter and when I drove it this season, I hear a rattling/crackling noise at high RPM under WOT in 1st and 2nd gear. About 5,000 RPM and up... Only with the gas pedal mashed to the floor.
I'm wondering what this noise is. I thought it was ping but now I'm not sure. I did the SeaFoam and GM Top Engine Cleaner treatments and still have this noise. Always use 93 octane.
If I damaged the internals with the over-rev, I would imagine that I would hear/feel strange things at idle as well as at speed, correct?
Thanks to you both. Does the noise I'm describing sound more like a pinging or a broken spring? If it was something mechanical, wouldn't it be heard throughout the RPM range and especailly at idle?
If you have had a mechanical over-rev,and the car is making any unusual noises,it is a very good idea to pull the valve covers and check for problems.I've had several broken springs, the one pictured made only a slight ticking.A stuck or dropped valve could destroy your engine.
