Safest bet is to use a pushrod checker

I have done this several times now and always wait until the heads are bolted down to do a final measurement. If you plan things right, you can measure and then finish putting the car together while waiting for pushrods.

This last time I ended up with an odd length (7.475") and no one had the Comps in stock. But Trend makes them for Comp and they had them and shipped them the same day. Only took a couple of days to get. I also ordered their pushrod brush for cleaning the inside of the pushrod. A lot of guys seem to have oiling issues and I really don't think they do a careful job of cleaning the pushrods before installation. 10 minutes submerged in oil will prefill them and reduce the time for oil to get to the rockers, which should be coated with assembly lube in the critical contact areas to keep them from running dry until oil gets there. When the motor has been apart it can take several minutes for oil to get up top.
