Default Cam Question

I have a stock 01 coupe with 70K on it. I want to do a small cam and rockers, what is the biggest cam and rockers I can use without needing to do headers and other supporting mods? I am planning a stroker for the future but I want a little something for now.

I don't think there is necessarily an issue without doing many off the supporting mods. Only you wouldn't be getting the most out of the performance.

For example, I just put a mid-high 230's duration cam in my LS1 TA without headers or any sort of intake. Quite noticable difference in performance, and I still have stock manifolds and the crappy LS1 intake.

However, if you have an automatic, you will certainly need to upgrade the torque converter. I went a few months with the stock stall, and let me just say, it wasn't the best on the street.

Could probably get you a custom spec'ed cam that would work with your stock parts and still perform pretty well. But i your going to do a stroker why not go ahead and get some 1 7/8" headers with the cam and just reuse them with the stroker?

You can go large, cam only, and see good gains.Adding supporting mods will compliment those gains. However you may not pass emissions. You might want to post in your region and ask what the guys in your state are passing with.

thanks, I am waiting until I get the car registered in Ohio before I kill all of the emissions stuff. I am going to get a tune so I should be able to do ok with the gains.

I was just looking at texas speed, they have a kit with the MS4, push rods, and double springs for $700, they say 60rwhp gain and I love the sound. I may be ordering one after the new year, can someone explain the choice in LSA, 111 to 112.....thanks

I think 60 HP is overly optimistic with just a cam only install--maybe with new heads--Are you sure the dyno graph didn't include heads?? Most cams only are in the 35-45 range-- Here in calif with our smog police --usually it takes nothing lower than a 114 LSA to pass emmisions--someimes you can get a 112 to pass but with major tuning--every cam is ground differently so I'm just saying as an average---(IMO)

Just looked at the specs and details from Texas Speed---This is a HUGE cam !! deffanately wont pass smog--approx 240 duration and .650 lift on the intake and only avail. in a 111 or 112 LSA--Stiil don't believe that it will produce 60 HP on a stock LS1 with ls1 intake and stock 853 hds and stock exhaust------
