How does the clutch feel when it happens? It's possible that the clutch isn't disengaging, or there are numerous internal tranny problems that can cause it to stick in gear. Is it always the same gear that gets stuck?
The clutch always feels fine. I always wonder if I've not pushed the clutch pedal in all the way but that has not been the case. Usually the shifter is getting stuck in the lower gears (1-3)
It sounds like an internal tranny problem to me, but I would try the potential "easy" fixes first:
- Do the shifter alignment
- Bleed the clutch
- Change to a synthetic trans fluid, especially if the fluid is old. Pay attention to the fluid that drains out, looking for metal bits or a shiny metal shimmer to the fluid, indicating that something broke inside.
Aside from that, it could be broken synchro keys, a bent shift fork or broken shift fork pads, some kind of debris getting stuck somewhere it shouldn't be, etc... all of those problems would require removal and most likely rebuilding of the transmission.
While you diong the shifter inspection alignment, remove the shifter fron the shift housing and lubricate the shift rail and shift ball with lithuim grease! Make a big difference it it was dry.
