I'm planning to install an LG Pro system in my 2002 Z06 this weekend that I picked up used. The headers do not have AIR tube fittings. Can I just remove the sections that go to the stock manifolds and plug them off without any problems? I'll be using o2 sims for the rear sensors as a temporary fix until I get a tune - will that help the cause if I go without AIR tubes hooked up? Is there any potential for engine damage without them?
Tune it out and remove the pipes, although the passenger side pipe bolts to the back of the drivers side head. The fitting is slotted so if you can loosen the bolt you won't need to remove the intake but you may need to remove the drivers valve cover and coils to get better access. Once done, spark plug changes are a snap.
I wasn't planning to have the car tuned just yet - I was going to wait until later in 2009 when I get some more serious mods done. It's just to save a little $$ now, that's why I got the sims as a temporary solution.
Without a tune, you will get an error on the DIC; thats all. Something like a P 430.
Is that something I can clear from the DIC myself or is it an actual check engine light that won't go away without further attention? Will it cause driveability problems?
Yes, It is easy to clear yourself. Just press the OPTIONS button and the FUEL button at the same time. This will put the DIC into the diagnostics display. You can research the forum for a better explanation on everyting you can do there, but once in this mode, it is easy to RESET any faults.
My P430 only came on occasionally, so I would just reach up and clear it.
P0430 is a cat efficiency code. Fairly common for a hi-flow cat equipped car (and/or P0420) to throw, but not directly related to the AIR system.
The AIR system codes most likely to be thrown would be:
P0410
P0412
P1415
P1416
Yes, you can easily clear and reset from the dash, and no drivability implications by removing this system. It only functions for a few mins after a cold start anyways.
