good afternoon all. question. my automatic '04 is slipping baaaaaad. sometimes wont even shift into third. tranny shop is telling me its probably got some major internal issue. a buddy of mine is telling me his was acting the exact same way and all he did was get the tranny serviced (flushed) and he was back on the road, no problems. what do you all think. shop is charging $375 to open it up and "take a look", transmission flush is about $150. she's got 71k miles on it and 1st and 2nd gears have no problems whatsoever. any direction you all can give me will be greatly appreciated.
I know you don't want to hear this but sounds like your trannies on it's way home to glory.
Shop should be able to tell as soon as they drop the pan and see/smell the burnt goo inside that used to be the fluid. Mine went south at 86K. 3-4 pack fried. If that's the case it's either rebuild time or better yet just get a stage 5 and be done with it. You'll be SOOO glad you did.
I think if you do need to replace or rebuild it, give Rodney at RPM a call, I think you can do an exchange cheaper than a rebuild from a tranny shop. + you have peace of mind that it done right...

No way to tell for sure, however mine started slipping at 66K and it was repaired under my extended warranty. The clutch packs went bad. Total tranny rebuild / upgrade to 500+ HP
Here's my guess. and it is nothing more than a guess. You have about a 15% chance that it's something that a flush and fill would fix. usually only works if the tranny is low on fluid. Your Corvette is a sealed system (fluid goes in the same hole it comes out) see what a tech will charge to check it. Take a close look at the condition of the fluid.
So lets take a look at it from a risk reward. First you pay $150 for the flush and fill and it works. Priceless!!! Second you pay $150 for the flush and fill and the problem isn't' fixed so you now you have no choice you pay $375.00 to open it up and find out the problem problem. Now if you go the open it up route and if there's no problem (15% possibility) you just paid $225 to much for a flush and fill, which I'm assuming is in the open it up and take a look price. If there is a problem then you have to prepare for a much bigger bill.

Sorry man, I know the feeling
Same happened to me. Car smells like it's burning and 3-4 gears are history. New tranny needed. RPM's Level IV will be the replacement for my 460 RWHP.
Excellent choice! I'd have gone that route but a buddy that's a longtime drag racer happens to own a tranny shop and knows the transmission inside/out so we just did it ourselves to a level 5 for the cost of the parts. Been totally happy with it. But I agree that if you have to pay full boat call RPM, they build great trannies.
I'm waiting for one I bought online as we speek-should (better) be here tonight since I have a shop waiting to install it tomorrow
I had exactly the same issues with 2-3 taking longer and ramping up the rpms during shifting.I have 102000 on the clock.
In my book it's time so I got the tranny with torque convereter and 3.15 gears (performance).
I may eigther sell the old core or rebuild it and than sell -will see...
Good luck...
RPM Level IV going in this weekend. Having West Coast Corvette in Anaheim, CA doing the work. Sending my SS3200 Yank converter sent back for a clean and re-stall to SS3800. Might even go with an SS4000. I'm sure I'll get around to letting everyone know the results. Can't wait to finally feel what a shift with all this power is supposed to feel like.
