Well I finally got the dreaded "Service Column Lock" but I have one question. First off the car is a 1999 6-speed with 107K miles. I had problems with the car not starting and needing a jump a few times but then it would work perfect. I am still unsure if the battery needs replacing but its been working. Well after one of the days of the battery needing a jump I got the message "Service Column Lock" (I read low voltage can start this problem). The car still ran and drove just fine but it had the message on the display. Well I noticed the last week it has been acting up, today it was really bad. It ran fine going to the Doctor but after leaving it started acting up. It will run fine then all of a sudden it feels like the fuel is being cut (car stays on, but it will not accelerate) then it will go again then shut down again. I noticed a few days ago it would cut out above 65 mph, but today I got it to 75mph.
I read other threads and only found info that an auto will shut off after 2 mph and a manual with the GM service done will do the same. But I did not see anything about the car acting up like mine is.
I going to order the bypass but want to see if this other issue is related or something different. Also who would you recommend buying the bypass from?
I just let it check for codes then reset it. After I tried starting it the car would not crank over like if it had a dead or low battery. I jumped started it then it drove fine (still had the service steering column message but did not cut out). I turned it off and the car started again fine. I think I need a new battery also, it has to be weak.
Anything under 12.7 Volts on start up will cause the column problem to appear. Put a new battery in it reset the codes and see how you go. Also check alternator is charging correctly. It should be charging between 13.7 Volts and 14.2 Volts while ideling.
