What was the condition of the original tank that was causing the leak/smell? Were you able to determine that?
As I said, when I took it out, I carefully inspected it. I expected to find a crack or some obvious flaw that was causing the leak, but I can't find anything. Only the rubber grommet on the base of the pressure sensor had some deterioration and I'm not 100% certain that that didn't happen as I removed it. If I hadn't already been at the point of having the tank out, I would definitely have replaced the sensor before removing the tank. But as it was, I was already there with the tank out and a replacement ready to go in. So in it went. I've considered trying to find some way to seal up the big opening where I removed the siphon jet pump/sending unit and filling the tank up with water just to see if I can find where the leak was coming from, but the only justification I can see to even going to the effort is if I hope to prove that it was just the sensor grommet and then resell my used tank. If however I were to find an actual cracked friction weld or something, most likely I'd pitch it in the dumpster. The work involved to repair it doesn't seem worth what I could sell it for. So for the time being, I'm happy that I'm not leaking anymore and too exhausted to monkey with the old tank.
Have read all the comments on the fuel leak on the right side. I have a '97 that had a small leak at the inline filter connection. I dropped the shield/strap on the right tank before I realized it held the tank up. It dropped maybe a 1/2' - 3/4". After replacing the inline filter I check for leaks with the engine running, the filter didn't leak but after a minute or two something started leaking really bad on top of the tank. Both tanks were full. What's up there anyway.
i am in the same boat as you, i have a small pin hole in my right tank..some moron years ago who installed the stereo amp used a screw that was a tad to long. it pierced the tank. it looks like he just used a handful of jb weld and high temp heat coating in an attempt to close up the hole...well it lasted for 8-9 years and now its dripping. i now need to find a reasonably priced right side tank for my 00 vette..
on a different note did you consider using MEK to close your leak with another piece of similar tank plastic?
