2001 Z06 all of a sudden a loud ticking noise coming from the engine.
What could it be? Even when the car is on idle and warmed up the noise is quite loud.
The car is stock ,just a borla exhaust and a tune. It drives normal, oil pressure is normal and so as temp. On the last oil change it was consuming between 1 to 2 quarts of oil.
In my minivan i also had the ticking noise was loud, the mechanic would always recommend some MMO( Marvel Mystery Oil) and it would quiet the ticking sound completely, i dont know if it will help, but figured i would just give you some info , good luck
Its better to fix the problem than to hide it with snake oils. Put a stethescope to the valve covers and find the noise. You might wnat to pull off the valve covers and look for and damage, bad lifter, pushrod...etc.

100% i just said that we did that for the minivan which is a POS the verte would get the full treatment, of anything it needed
Could be a sticking valve too or maybe you lost a valve retainer clip. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is a lifter as already stated. The lifter will usually pressurize and the noise will abate. But if it remains constant, I would suggest locating it first, pull the valve cover and get a quick look at the rocker. You could have lost the needle bearings in the rocker itself...has happened to people before.

If you have the Magnacharger as listed in your profile it's not stock!
Now if you do have this mod I would expect you have upgraded valve springs meaning duals.
You may have broken a valve spring and the inner spring has saved your butt.
Find the problem before it finds your wallet!
An exhaust leak can make a loud ticking noise. Make sure your AIR tubes are tight and that there are no other leaks(crack?) from the manifolds/headers.

I'm wih TCMC5 ... check for exhaust manifold gasket leaks
or air tubes - my headers have small cracks where the air tubes
weld on and they make a distinct ticking sound. I also had a
(dual) valve spring break but it was Very obvious- ran terrible.
I hate to even ask this but: Did you change gas stations or gas? I bought my car and it was knocking when I got it. I think the previous owner put some regular unleaded in it. I got to a station where I knew the fuel quality and filled it up. The knock went away within about an hour.
Always put in chevron 91 octane here in CA. I just got it back from the shop and they said it's coming from the short block. I will get a 2nd and 3rd opinion.
