Well, I got my first Vette a few months ago and shortly after got some knocking at 1,500 rpm and up. Knocking speed increases as engine speed increases.
Here are some vids I took-- let me know what u guys think?????
Not sure about getting the pan off but yes you can do a cam swap in the car. You need to make a video or soundclip of what the engine sounds like and post it so we can hear it.
IF it is a rod bearing that spun then your best bet is to pull the motor or get another motor, the crank in most cases will need to be turned and oversized bearings used. If it is a rod knock and I were you I would go with at least a 383. Good luck, hopefully its not the lower end
Take off the oil filter.Cut it open, most auto parts places will lend the tool, and look for gold colored particles in the pleats. If you've spun a bearing,it's time to pull the motor.
You can change cams with the motor in the car. http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?category=0
I'll open up that oil filter as soon as I get home next week. I have a couple video clips on my portable drive with me but can not open them and do not know how to post them. I can try sending them via email to anyone willing to check it out. Meanwhile, I'll try to figure out how to post them. I was hoping it was a sticky lifter but sounds a lil low to me. Thanks for the input, everything helps...
Well to answer your first 2 questions, You can swap the cam in the car. You can probably get at the crank with the block in the car by using an engine hoist to support the engine, and dropping the cradle, but if you are going to go through all of that; why not just pull it and do it right?
What if anything were you doing right before it started? manual or auto? post up an audio file so we can hear it.
ut siunds like pi;ot bearing. Try to isolate where the noise is coming from. My pilot was quite when cold but, soon got noisy. Does it make the noise when in gear and driving?
Hate to say it, but it sure sounds like a rod bearing to me. Drain the oil and cut the filter open like stated in an earlier post, that'll tell you for sure what's going on. I just went through the same thing!
Car was down for 2 months waiting for the shortblock to get re-done.
Just finished putting it back together a week ago and now breaking in the re-done short block. Good luck. Look at the bright side, now might be a good time to put a stroker in there!
Sure sounds like a rod to me.
The way to tell for sure is to let it idle and pull off plug wires one at a time, when you find the one that make the noise go away that will be the culprit.

This will definately tell if it is a rod bearing and which one it is.
