I would do one thing prior to pulling the engine. I would pull the valve covers to make sure you don't have a broken valve spring that would allow the lifter to lift off the cam. Might be a long shot but before pulling the engine I would check the valve springs.
Also depending on the cause of spinning you might do a total rebuild. Given the engine has ONLY a spun rod bearing I would use a new crank with the drilled front end to retain the pulley and a new pulley that is keyed to the crank.
Yeah, I'm a lil less experienced w/bottom end rebuilds but thats why I am on this board, to learn from the more experienced who have dealt with this situation. I appreciate all of the experienced advice and possible options for this problem.
When I get home I will definately perform all of the advised tests and update this thread. Thanks guys
Pulled the valve covers last weekend, everything looked good. So I drained the oil and found a few small pieces of metal/brass. I was unable to find the proper tool to cut open the oil filter. With what was found in the oil and from the majority of info in this thread I will proceed as I have a bad rod bearing.
AFTER MUCH RESEARCH... maybe some added input to help....
im in the same situation with a 97 vette, 63 k miles. Spun Rod bearing. does this work?!?! step by step....
1 - find culprit by pulling plug wires
2 - drop oil pan from car by "loosening" cradle and creating room with a cherry picker and jack stands to support engine.
3 - examine culprit and THAN decide if you have to replace everything or if you can just put in a new bearing IF AND ONLY IF, the damage is minimal. (this just means instead of spending 2000 for a motor it end up being under 100 for bearings and the gasket and all)
- it may be risky, but is it worth it to try for someone hurting for cash as it is?

So now, who has a nice motor for a young Vet?
Thanks for all the help and advice
At my shop, all Vets receive a 10% discount on labor, across the board. Parts are harder to discount but I still try.
I'd replace them all while in there I guess. I decided to go with a performance engine replacement instead. Here are my options, what do you guys think:
fullforged 348 Short block, 3k miles $1,500
--Forged 427 rotating assembly-$800 with a l29 454 from a late 90's truck for $250 but i'm not sure the l29 will convert though the guy sellins says it will??????

L29 454! Yea sure,,,with enough money, time and some BIG hammers, you can fit anything in there. Will it work,,, I doubt it. Oh, yea, more money and it will. Your thinking about installing a block that came from a late model truck. Yea, all those sensors will fit right on there!
Seriously, Get the correct LS series engine with what ever mods that you want and install it. Save the radical shoe horn conversions to someone who has major time and bucks to throw at the car. You and your wallet will be MUCH HAPPIER!
Sounds like a good time to up-grade to a LS6 or a LS2 or even LS3. If i had my choice, find a good LS3 and do the couple of MODs it takes to install it. All that new power and ability to make lots more!!!!!:sm ash:
why are all these LS1s having rod bearing failures? I have seen so many rod bearing failure videos it almost scares me enough I don't want to drive my vette or trans am. I've heard alot of them on LS1tech. do people beat the cars to death or are these LS engine just weak? I had a V8 S10 when i was in school and raced it every weekend, beat the thing to death and never did hurt it.
