If you check out my catch can article and PCV valve replacement procedure, you'll get a good idea as to how it should be done on a 97-03s. You can find their links on this page:
Let me add that I am a big proponent of keeping the can in a cool area that forces the return line gases to travel uphill. Airborn oil and water will coalesce and condense more easily on cooler surfaces.
Do you have a LS6 valley cover or LS1. For LS1 you take the PCV line and run it to the top of the catch can. Then you take a line and run it from the middle of the catch can to the intake. You can put the PCV valve on either side. For LS6 you take the line from the valley cover to the top of the can and middle line to the intake. Front of the passenger valley cover should run to the throttle body for LS1 TBs and to the air bridge for LS2 equipped TBs.
