unless your relay says that its waterproof, waterproof it anyway! wrapping in electrical tape is usually not good enough for a relay because the tape will fall off. I usually seal the seams of the relay, where you can see and pry it apart if you need to, with silicone to keep the relay itself water tight. then I usually use spade connectors on the relay terminals instead of a plug, wrap it up in electrical tape leaving a hole in the bottom, then fill that entire cavity (between the spade terminals) with silicone, this makes it 100% water tight. if I ever need to remove, replace, or change the wiring on that relay, cut the tape off then pull the silicone out with a pair of needle nose pliers, it actually comes back off surprisingly easily if needed.
I've fallen victim to my own complacency a couple of times when it comes to water in the electronics under the hood or behind the rear tail lights. unless its inside the cabin I protect anything I add to my car as if its going to be submerged in water, that way I know everything will work and will continue to work for years to come. clear silicone is your best friend for this!
