Default 2002 Air Box Mod question

My buddy has an 02 vert. Yesterday he wanted to mod the airbox. We cut a 4 inch hole in the shroud, the bottom of the airbox itself (where the filter sits), and 3 holes on the top of the airbox.

Today he drove it and he says it bucking and about to stall. Any suggestions or is their something he missed? PLEASE ADVISE!

You cut a hole in the BOTTOM of the air box? That would allow unfiltered air in.

If I undrstand what you did correctly, the hold in the botom of the box would cause some turbulence as well. This is the likely cause of the surging.

The 02 air box does not need much modification to work well, and no additional holes are necessary as my dyno results have shown.

A hole in the bottom of the airbox where the filter sits. So its before the filter. Therefore, it's not unfiltered. Am i right or wrong?

I looked on Dougrippie's web site at the picture of their modified C5 airbox cover, and it has a lot of surface area removed. I was thinking of performing a similar mod to my old 02 box cover. I'm currently using the 02 ZO6 cover. Any comments?

i have my 02 setup with a cut air box and a K&N filter and it runs fine. mine is cut like they show in the MID AMERICA catalog. also i have a water shield over the cut out air box so the water can not go into the filter when you open the hood, and if you want a sketck i can scan it to you.

nitrosuzie

The easiest way to increase air flow in this manor is to replace the stock cover with the one that comes on the 2002 Z06...$49 and it takes a minute to swap out.

I have to agree. If you cut a hole in the bottom of the air box and the shroud, you're letting unfiltered air in. When I replaced mine with an aftermarket setup, I noted that the design of the stock box allows air flow from the hole in the top, through the filter, into the bottom half of the air box and into the MAF. A hole in the shroud / bottom housing would bypass the filter.

If the hole in the air box is under the filter, you are letting unfiltered air in. Just to clarify, the shroud is under the air box, but is not part of the air box. Cutting the shroud does help to get cold air in. I feel there is no need to add holes to the 2002 box.

With 420RWHP, I dyno <2HP difference between no filter or lid, and mildly modified box (with no Extra holes). Save the hole saw for door **** installation.

Yup, cutting the bottom of the air box (the part that rests on the radiator shroud) is bad. :nono:

But now what do you do is the question?

My first thing to do would be to get the duct tape out and either tape the hole in the bottom of the air box closed or tape the removed piece of plastic back in place. I would NOT drive it as is.

Next you could replace the stock air box with Blackwing filter and cold air cover, if the hole you cut in the shroud lines up. (Like wise with the Vortex, but the hole you cut is less likely to line up with the required hole for the Vortex) cost ~ $250

Or you could try to buy a stock air box assembly to replace the one you cut. You could probably go to the Forsale/Wanted section of this forum and pick up a used one. cost ~ cheap

I wouldn't be too concerned about the shroud. But if you wanted to replace it you can buy a new one from Fichtner Chevrolet at http://www.angelfire.com/mt/corvetteken/parts.html. cost ~ $33

Good Luck.

Here's one way to get the stock assembly to breath as best it can:

I've been messin' around with this idea (so far so good). I used 4 small bungee cords (as shown) and saftey wired them together where they intersect (if one or two came off, or broke, they wouldn't go anywhere).

You could use nuts and bolts, but this way I can get the filter out with no tools. And this orentation allows for 8 pressure points around the perimeter of the filter frame, for a good seal.

I don't really care for the way it looks, 4 bungees holding in the air filter of a sports car (but it's growing on me). Hey, it's effective, and it's free HP.
I may go back to my modified air box cover later, but I'm just giving this a try.

By the way that's a K&N air filter shown (not free).

Later.

I think the issue is with the bottom rather than the top. The 02 top flows quite well, but he aparently has a hole in the bottom of the air box.

He probably needs to buy a new airbox bottom (or my barely used Donaldson Blackwing filter, heh).

I also have an 02 vert. Installed a 02 Z06 cover and a K&N filter. Works great..pulls harder at WOT :) and no surging. :flag

Going with the GM 2002 Z06 Air Box is probably okay but I do not
recommend jacking around with other mods discussed unless your
are NEVER ever going to drive in the rain.

I was trapped in a Texas rain storm and my C5 was the first car to
die....it overdosed on water and the noise is something I will never
foret and never want to hear again. It was horrible.

This sad situation turned out good becase I now have a 2002 engine
in a 2001 Black Coupe. It took three weeks to get the engine and
another to get Humpty-Dumpty back together again.

Corvettes are not very good bad weather cars!

Is the Z06 air box any different in other ways than the stock air box (besides the air passage that can be seen on the top)? I have seen a picture of the Z06 box and it looks to have a different lid, maybe bigger or more air paths, but is there any other differences you can't see?

I like to play around with different ideas to maybe mod the stock air box. I am trying just a conical K/N filter in its place connected directly to the snout of the MAF and may try other changes just to see if I can come up with something a lot less expensive than the Vortex, Blackwing, etc. All are good products, but finding a "cheap" but just as effective alternative is the fun part of messing around with cars. I have opened up the little black shields that cover the area of the front near the fog lamps or whatever they are called. Will eventually put a screen of some sort over this area to hide the Dremel cut!).

I have the stock box from my 98 that you can have if the bottom is the same nitrosuzie....your not far from here & I could meet you halfway. Verify if you need it & I'll donate it to this good cause.
