Is it a tough job to change the flex plate in a A4 car?
Can it be done with the vette on a set of ramps?
Will any Ls1 plate work?
Whats the cost of a new vs. used?
Funny you should bring that up. Not the vette, but I rebuilt my truck 6.0L yesterday and was going to put it back in today and found a crack in the flexplate..... I guess these are known to crack from time to time. Of course no one open on Sunday that has one.
What makes you think your's has a crack? I had no idea until I started cleaning it (out of the truck).

I'm getting a knocking noise that sounds like it's coming from deep in the engine while at a idle in drive with the brake on. Put it park and it goes away.
You have two flexplates - one is part of the flywheel assembly while the other is attached to the torque converter. Here are a couple of shots from my A4. Your '97 should be very similar if not exactly the same.
Front flexplate
From the '97 Service Manual: The front flywheel, propshaft hub, and flexplate are balanced as an assembly. If service is required, the entire flywheel assembly should be replaced.
