Has anyone who purchased 3.73's from LAPD on the recent group purchase installed them yet? If so, what are your impressions? I'm particularly interested in Z06 owners that have gone to 3.73's. thanks
I have driven and ridden in several Z06's. With their lower first gear, I can't imagine 3.73 gears. They are traction limited already, and wind first and second gears very quickly. Just my thoughts.
I had my LAPD/GP 3.73s installed just last week in my 99 Coupe. As expected first and second gear pull tremendously. The surprise to me has been how 5h and sixth gear are now more than just overdrive.
I am nearly all setup fo rthe track this spring as I just purchased some 17X11 wheels for my drag radials. I should be able to lay down some of the power I now have.
Now that i have the 3.73s and am going to run it hard occassionally I will need bigger fuel injectors. I am heading up to CARTEK on 2/1 for the injectors and some more tuning on their on-site dyno.
I agree with "jschindler" -- the first two gears would be very low on a Z06 with the 3.73s. Those low two first gears has alot to do with the 0-60 times on the Z06. The 3.73 might be a little much on a Z06 although I highly recommend them on a C5 -- I have them and love them.
Man, not exactly glowing endorsements. I'm starting to regret buying the gears. Don't know if I want to put them in now. My Z is an everyday driver. How is the gas mileage affected?
Wasn't there an earlier post comparing Z06, 3.90 from motive, 3.73 getrag gear. If I remember correctly the first 2 gear ratio of the Z is almost identical to the 3.90. Looks like you gonna spend most of your time rowing.
I want a set but even $1650.00 seems like a lot, of course if I could get $600 for the 3.42 then $1050 is doable. What will it cost to install a set ?

Installation is about $450 with T/C around here! And you will need to reprogram the computer for an A4.
You don't need the 3.73 gears on a Z06 since the gears in the transmission already closely resemble a 3.90 ratio as far as overal ratios are concerned.
Use the 3.90 diff with a stock MN6 to get the equivalent of a Z06.

No the track was just real stickey that night... :)
Slicks, DR, runflats...?
I assume the new, beefier output shafts that have popped up fit this unit too... What do you anticipate being the weak link now?

I was running 275 drag radials.. The new output shafts are made out of a stronger metal.. The scary thing is the New weak link.. It should always be the tires.. easier said then done though.. the half shafts are pretty beefy.. my guess would be the clutch next or worst case the ring or pinion..
