Default Oil pump woes!!!!

Well im thinking i have a pinched O ring in the oil pump after my heads/cam install. At start up I had 50-60 at idle and would go to 80 psi with a blip of the throttle and the pressure has been slowly decreasing.. Now at idle im at 30 psi and it hardly raises from 2k to 5k I was thinking maybe a bad oil sensor but unlikely.. Also i noticed my valvetrain has been getting louder and louder.. I hate 2nd guessing myself so i took it all apart tonight and i got stuck on my slp pulley anyone know what size the threaded holes are?? I have a matco pulley removal kit with various bolt sizes but none seem to fit.. Anyone happen to know off-hand what size/pitch these are?

My sons camaro did the same thing after a HCI swap last year. It turned out after we bolted everything back together we pinched the o-ring. His car was making a very loud ticking noise. and the oil pressure would jump up and down a few psi at idle. Wound up going to the dealer and getting a new o-ring and installed it being very careful this time to ensure the o-ring went in correclty. He has great oil pressure now and no more problems.

Here is the o-ring we took out and the new o-ring beside it. Be prepared for sticker shock when you buy the o-ring. Seems like it was around $6 or $7.

Did you at least put a mechanical gauge on it before tearing it down?

Hey Andy,

That sucks but at least you found the problem early. I used red lock tite on those and the cam bolts. I think torque spec is 18 lbs.

Did the same thing. Finished H/C swap, drove and hour to the tuner and an hour back, 3 hours to CT to Lime Rock, and then halfway through the day lost pressure. Drove the car home and by the time I was in my driveway, I had almost zero pressure and the motor sounded like a room full of typewriters. I pulled it apart and found that the O-ring was pinched. When I went to the SLP chain with the shims, it makes the pickup sit a little different. You need to bolt the tube to the motor, and then bolt the retainer to the front and not the other way around.

They say the the gut thing is supressed memory. You probably were freezing your butt off and ended up missing a step.

It's been a really cold winter this year. I had the propane heater running alot this year when I've been out working in the garage because of the cold.

I cant wait for Spring

How often is a new cam retainer plate needed? I am planning a head/cam/intake swap and hadn't planned on swapping but I did buy ARP bolts for the retainer plate. If I were to buy the new plate I can't use the ARP's. My car only has a little over 10,000 miles so it should be fine to reuse, correct?

New plate is not the same. It has countersunk holes and flat head torx screws. The plate is worn if the cam had worn into it or the crank sprocket. Here is a good read on it: Link
