My buddy, who owns a 2001 Coupe said that he believed the 2002 Coupe came with LS6 intakes. Is he yankin' my chain?
No he is right... the intake on all of the cars this year and part of last is the same.. so is the block... I think that the major power gain in the Z06 is now due to the heads and camshaft...
And I believe my Corvette Quarterly may have mentioned something to the effect of a new intake on '01 LS1s that bumped up the hp rating on those Vettes.
If an LS1 guru can back up my post, then you would be a lucky guy in that your 01 should already have the new intake.

In 2001, GM made a change to the LS1 intake due to testing it did with the LS6 combination. That intake became the standard production item on ALL LS1 and LS6 equipped F-bodies and Y-bodies in 2001. Starting in 2001, the F-body lost the EGR system(The Vette never had it) and all intake manifolds are now identical, including the LS6 intake.

Man I really lucked out on my purchase! :yesnod: To get a car with shared components with the ZO6 is awesome! :D I had no clue when I purchased it. I asked if they had any '01's but they didn't. I guess that worked to my advantage.
yes he is right, all 2002 cars come with ls6 intakes, i know so because my friend checked the part numbers on them and they are indentical. Even 2001 cars.
I have heard that the difference is the air intake cover on the housing, that the coupe and vert is restricted big time and the Z06 has a nice wide mouth opening! I was going to purchase the Z06 intake housing cover for my 02 coupe hoping it would be and easy & inexpensive way to give the car a little more air! Am I correct on this???

Glenn. We know the LS1 intake is not the best. I put on a Vortex cold air and B & B PRT's at the same time and picked up 14 rwhp and 18 rwt. Hard to tell where the differences came from, you'll get lots of opinions. Some guys like going to the 02 Z06 intake and a K&N filter as it is the closest to stock and the least worries of water ingestion. Don't forget the Z06 also allows more air into the engine compartment via the screens and openings where the fog lights are on the coupe/vert.
There are many threads on cold air intakes. Do a "search" in archives. If you want any more advice, or help finding the archives, send me an e-mail and I'll try to help. There is a lot of good info out there on these mods.

The '02 Z06 airbox cover does have a larger inlet hole at the front. You should expect about a 1 to 3 hp increase. Removing the blackout panels in the fog light openings and installing Z06 screens will let some cold air into the airbox area for a few more hp. This Setup is the best option for someone that wants to get a few extra hp but feels a need to stay as stock as possible. These parts can be purchased from Fichtner Chevrolet (see the link in my signature) with a forum member discount. If you do not mind using after-market parts there are several options available that will produce a lot more hp. If you do not want to cut your radiator shroud there are several products available but none of them will produce as much power as those that require cutting. All of the products in the cutting required category will provide about the same hp improvement. The main differences between products in either category are cost, fit, appearance, and likelihood of ingesting water from puddles into the engine. Do some research before you decide.
If easy and inexpensive is what interests you in the Z06 lid and you do not mind a little cutting then you should consider what I have done. I bought a cone shaped filter from K&N. I removed the stock airbox and mounted the K&N filter in its place. I did have to cut the radiator shroud a bit for clearance (and to allow some cold air in). Installing the filter can be done in less than an hour (depending on how long you spend laying out and cutting the hole), the cost is Under $80, and the result is as good as with any of the more expensive systems. I dropped 0.3 sec. in the quarter with a best of 12.97 @ 110.8 mph my first time out with this mod. That is hard to beat for the price.

I was at the Magnaflow Dyno Day in September and Charlie Hoyt's Dyno Day a couple weeks ago. The only changes made to my '98 generally stock car were the addition of the 2002 Z06 airbox cover, a new stock paper filter and the WCC cold air screens. For dyno purposes, I think we can ignore the cold air screens. Both dynos were Dynojets and the numbers SAE corrected. The maximum HP increased from 294 to 308, TQ from 307 to 323 (the CF was 0.96 on the higher numbers, don't know what it was at the Magnaflow event). Also, the torque curve was much flatter. Not bad for a $45 mod and a $12 air filter.
Horsepower and torque will probably be less for my '01 (subtle improvements over earlier years) but you REALLY put a grin on my face...thanks. :chevy :seeya   :D

SoCal C5, thanks very much! That was some very useful info! :yesnod: :yesnod: :seeya
