Default Anyone have a Katech torquer cam?

How's it drive... does it make killer mid range torque? Looks like a '02-'04 Z06 cam but on a 112 LSA vs. the 117.5 stock LSA.

Looking for something w/ truly stock drivability and killer mid-range torque.

Thanks,
Brian

I asked if anyone has heard of or used Katech's head and cam setup a while ago and got nothing. I don't think anyone on the vette websites have experience with their heads/cam, only the total engine packages. I would think that these guys know what it takes to make these cars sing with the stock cube displacement but I might be wrong.

One of my buddies used to have it a few years ago, but he sold his car and doesn't really post on here anymore.

Cobra4B,
I noticed you have the G5X2 in your car. Do you feel that the cam you have is a bit much for a daily driver? The reason why i'm asking is because I'm looking at something smaller 228/230 on 112-114 and I was wondering how that was going to be as far as having "manners" I know its off topic but I had to ask.

I got the cam after driving a buddy's G5-X1E/AFR205 car... I felt I could tolerate something a bit bigger. At the time I was running HPDEs w/the car and wanted 3500-7000 rpm power. Now that I have a dedicated track car I only drive my Z06 on the street. I find that scooting around from 2000-5000 is what I do most often vs. winding it out and going 100+ to really use the cam. Plus, I have an aluminum flywheel which makes the stop/go driving more difficult... at low speeds the car will buck which is par for the course with a big cam... it's due to the overlap and no amount of PCM tuning can fix it.

So... instead of putting in a heavier flywheel I want a cam with better manners... I want to be able to let the car idle along in gear in the morning in stop/go traffic.

It's really all about how you're going to use the car and what your tolerance is. When I first got my car back in '03 I was 22 and wanted it to be as loud as possible etc... now 6 years later I have a different set of needs/wants.

Brian, the cam I use has that killer midrange you're looking for, but it still has great power in the upper band. Crane "Z" cam 228-232@112+5. It idles at 825 with a mild lope, and hit 350RWTQ @ 2200. The grind also increases your DCR.

How's it drive though? Could you let the car roll forard in gear at idle under it's own power? My car stock could do that just fine... w/ the G5-X2 cam it'd start bucking itself into oblivion due to the overlap.

Why dont u buy G5x1-E cam as it has great driveability and u already driven ur buddies vette who has G5x1-E, i ust placed the order CMC-14 from 21stcenturymusclecars.com 228/232 595/598 113+0, i think this cam would be perfect, i want power, good street manners, emmission legal, little choppy idle.....little bit of everything i was almost plcaed the order for G5x1-E but at the last min i changed my mind.

Well it looks like the Katech Torquer cam has -13 degrees of overlap. It seems like this would be a very well suited cam for day to day traffic.

With the stock LS6 clutch, it'll just idle away from a dead stop, without really slipping it much. The Crane cam's specs are very similar to the G5X-1 mentioned above, but the lobes are a different design, there's more lift, and more advance ground in.

Find a cam with no/negative overlap and it will VERY tame...heck you might even pass emissions with a cam with about -7* of overlap. I think advanced dyno (not sure if they are around anymore since I havent seen them on the boards in a while) had a cam with negative ol and made great numbers...

What calculation do you use to determine overlap?

EDIT: Found this...

Overlap
Overlap is the angle in crankshaft degrees that both the intake and exhaust valves are open. This occurs at the end of the exhaust stroke and the beginning of the intake stroke. Increasing lift duration and/or decreasing lobe separation increases overlap. At high engine speeds, overlap allows the rush of exhaust gasses out the exhaust valve to help pull the fresh air/fuel mixture into the cylinder through the intake valve. Increased engine speed enhances the effect. Therefore increasing overlap, increases top-end power and reduces low-speed power and idle quality.

Found this calculator: http://www.wallaceracing.com/overlap-calc.php

Shows the 204/218 w/ a 112 LSA has -13 degrees of overlap. My G5-X2 has 8 degrees of overlap.

Yeah...

Add the intake and exhaust
Divide by 4
Subtract the LSA
Multiply by 2

This will give you overlap
