I was changing the oil in my '98 last weekend and happened to notice four quarts of Mobil 1 in the back of a cabinet that I have probably had for two years, maybe three. I decided to use them first and when I took the cap off the first quart, instead of the oil being a clear, dark amber color it was more like the color of coffee with cream, almost like the color of oil that has water in it and is emulsified. I threw that quart away and opened another and it the same appearance. I began pouring it into another container and after dumping maybe four ounces of the coffee colored stuff the oil change to regular color.
Has anyone ever seen this? Do the additives in Mobil 1 separat from the oil somehow? All four quarts were the same way.
It seems like there was a little moister in the oil containers, it most likely would have been ok to use.
But you did what I would have done "got new oil" just incase.
As stated above it sounds like you had some moisture that contaminated the top several ounces of the oil. Could have resulted from the effects of condensation if you stored it in an unheated garage where it can be cool/cold at night and hotter during the day........
I sure hope that's not the case. If that were to happen in a sealed bottle, imagine an engine in a car stored over the winter in an unheated garage.

Mobil says the shelf life is 5 years max..
I think some additives might separate, but if you shake the bottle up, they should remix. If the oil did not look consistent, I would probably choose to be on the safe side too.
