Default Oil Cooler Install

After all of the engine mods my oil temp is constantly higher than coolant temps. Should I install an oil cooler if temps are consistently 210-230 degrees? Sometimes even higher...

What are your mods?

The 210-230 temps are not that abonormal, oil temps will almost always be higher than coolant temps.

those temps look fine. I don't think you need anything.

I had to put one on because mine was 299* last time I was at the track. I don't think 230* is that bad at all, not worth the money and time unless you plan on doing some track days. If you go to the autocross section, there are about 3 threads currently on oil cooler installs if you decide to do it.

Those temps are not out of line. In fact, you want your oil to get above 212 degrees to boil off any moisture and condensation in the oil. Full Synthetic oils can easily handle those temps.

You don't need 212 to get rid of the moisture in your oil. It will evaporate just fine at 180 degrees.

Thanks to all. Just want to make sure as adding a oil cooler was not that much effort. Maybe that's the problem with digital gauges and watching those temps. slowly creep up.

Mods include Trick Flow Heads and Cam. Harland Sharp rocker arms and valvetrain rebuild, Lingenfelter ported Throttle body, Granatelli cold air, SLP Intake (LS6). Melrose Long-Tubes, Random Tech Cate, X-pipe, Corsa Pace Car, dyno-tune and others I'm sure I'm forgetting. Currently at about 505-512 hp on the dyno...428-432 at the wheels.

Thanks again all.

That's good to know. I didn't think it could come out of solution unless the oil got hot enough to boil it out - thats what I,ve been hearing. After I put in the 160 stat and lowered the fan-on temps to about 190 the oil is usually about 200 degrees unless its really hot and I'm driving hard. rarely gets over 212. I've been changing the oil at about 3,000 miles or every three months just because of the moisture issue.

Oil temps are always hotter than coolant. If you're driving in 6th gear at 80mph for 100 miles and the oil temp doesn't go lower than 230 degrees you could use an oil cooler. I hope to install one before it gets hot here in KS.

Definitely DON'T add a cooler for oil temps in those ranges. You add hoses, connections, adapter, etc., all giving you much more opportunities for oil leaks, maintaining oil hoses, etc. If you don't get your car on the track where your oil temps go above 280, you don't really need one.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike
