Stopped by the Chevy store up the street to pick up a coolant reservoir cap today.
The parts counter guy brought out an 18 psi cap, and the one in my '04 is 15 psi. He said that this was the only part number listed for the '04s: RC87, GM 25713160. I told him that I wanted to get the list's input before I bought the cap.
What say you, the Collective? Is this the right cap? Was the 15 psi version superceded? My gut instinct is that the additional 20% higher pressure should not be an issue, but something's making me uncomfortable with the idea of not replacing the cap with a one-for-one OE cap.
Thanks!
Mark

I think that you are misinterpreting my post. I never said or implied the cap pressure was increased for any particular reason. I'm merely repeating what I have read in 2 posts here on the Forum. 'The replacement caps from GM are now 18#'.
... I never implied that you said they increased the cap pressure for a reason. I asked the question in general because the last time I checked 18 was greater than 15. "They", being GM, have essentially increased the cap pressure application for the C5s since that is the only cap available from them. Why? ... who knows, but your assumption is probably correct - one cap fits all, saves money.

The 18 lb cap is the replacement from GM and has been this way for a year or more now.
The extra 3 lbs of pressure raises the boiling point approx 9 degrees, regardless of reason.
