Default 4 piston front brake packages???

Stoptech seems to be the only company out there right now selling a good quality 4 piston bolt on front brake upgrade. I checked Wilwood, Baer as well but they both have the 6 piston. Anyone else?

Any particular reason why you favor a 4 piston over a 6 piston design?

Wilwood does make a 4 piston setup (SL-4R). They use the same size pads (7420's) are the SL-6R's.

Also Brembo, Alcon, SSBC, and probably others like Performance Fricton make a 4 piston setup.

Depending on your application the 6 piston generally gives you a little better endurance or life on your pads and rotors (I've been told).

Generally inthe past we have had much better luck with 4 piston- more clamping pressure than a 6 and less unsprung weight. If we were building the car for endurance type of events where there is more of a concern with heat and even pad wear than I would probably look into 6's. The car is gonna be prepped for regional type SCCA races.

A few pieces of information...

1) 6-piston is generally able to provide better pad wear characteristics (assuming the pistons are properly sized sequentially and it's not using individual "padlets".)

2) Clamping force is a factor of piston volume and line pressure, meaning that it doesn't matter whether it is 4, 6, 8 or 10 pistons. The clamping force will be equal if the overall volume is equal.

With that said, there are still benefits to a 4-piston caliper such as better wheel fitment, and as you mentioned, usually better weight savings.

Brembo does in fact offer 2 different 4-piston options for the C5 Corvette, one with 1pc. 14" discs and another with 2pc. fully floating disc assemblies. Quality wise you will not find a better option period. Performance wise, these systems are amazing, great pedal feel, lots of braking power, incredible modulation, and also the best longevity in terms of pads and rotor life (compared to any other 4-piston options available).

If you have the wheel sizes that allow for it, the 6-piston systems we offer are hands down the best performing options available. You get everything mentioned for the 4-piston systems, PLUS even better pad and rotor life due to the larger pad area and volume.

You can't go wrong with any of the Brembo options, as they are all properly engineered for the application. The quality of the individual components is the highest level availabel which means you won't have to do things like safety wire the rotor hardware, replace hats or brackets if they show wear or actually fail, and you won't need to rebuild your calipers as typical maintenance.

There's tons of Brembo users on this forum and also many authorized dealers that sponsor this forum. If you do a few searches you will find a lot of people running the products themselves and you can get first hand opinions and references. No need to just take my word for it.

As J.R. points out, Wilwood offers a BSL4r that will work with the same brackets as the BSL6r. However...the mount offset is 'slightly' different meaning the centering will take some shim adjustment. The other issue is that the only piston size close to the needs of a BSL6 kit is 4 x 1.75 for an increase in total area. Not all bad but there. *they are also dust booted.
