Default Threw A CEL Today.

The Weather has gotten a lot warmer (from around 30 degrees to 70). Today when I started up my Vette and went cruising I threw a CEL and decided to swing by autozone and have them do the read out. They said that it read "Bank 1 is too lean"

Here is what I'm thinking...The car is a '98 and last fall I installed Z06 heads, BBK intake mani + throttle body, a Vararam CAI, Headers, and a free flowing exahust....It's lean because I haven't gotten it tuned right? Now that it's getting warmer out (less dense air) could that be why it's reading lean?

On to my extremely noobish question...What does it take to get my car tuned? Can I just schedule a time with any reputable Dyno shop and have them do it?? Or do I need some type of piggyback ECU or something?

Thanks guys!!

WOW,,,your NEW to C5!

You dont need NO STINKING AutoZone to read your DTCs!!! Theres a built in program inside the PCM/IPC that you can access to read them your self. When I get home tonight, I will post you a detailed instruction on how to do it your self using the DIC and DIc buttons.

As for programming; all C5s have programable memmory PCMs. There is Tuning Software/ Data Logging Programs available that you access thru a laptop and the OBDII connection under the dash. The best two are EFI Live and HP Tuners.

There are C5 owners in your area somewhere that have EFI Live and can use that soft ware to diagnose your issue and tune your car. You have a 98 so if they use EFI Live, it wont even use up one of their tuning lisense. See if you can find some one in your local area that has the programs and will be willing to help a brother out!

You need to make sure that there isnt a mechanical issue or electrical issue causing that problem first and then if it is, you need to fix the issue that causing a lean bank 1.

Taking your car to any old dyno shop to tune your C5 can create problems. You need to quary the forum and see if someone in your area recommends a quality Corvette tuner in your area. Be ready to spend $400-$500 for a full tune.

The TB and Vararam are most likely causing your issues. Thats not a bad thing, just that their making air flow conditions that your PCM cant adjust for properly and the PCM is having heart burn with the conditions.

Your Long Term Fuel Trims ( LTFT) are most likely all whacked out and I bet you a cold one that your fuel mileage is down around 22-23 MPG highway when it use to be 28-30 mpg. Been there!! You feel a big seat of the pants improvement! RIGHT? Thats because when your in Wide Open Throttle (WOT) your NOT in closed loop anymore and run off PE tables

Before you get a tune, make SURE that your car is running to its fullest extent possible and that you have completed all the mods that your going to complete!!

Consider installing:
178 degree Thermostst
Throttle BodY By-pass Mod
Descreen your MAF before the tune
Thats all I can think of!

Wow Bill,
Thank you SO much for taking the time to type all that out and give me a few good explanations! And yes, you are 100% correct! I bought my C5 last fall and started to build it up a little and then it got too cold and I had to park it. With that being said, I am VERY new to the Corvette world...But I'm loving it thus far!

Descreen my MAF? TB bypass mod? I'm not totally sure what either of those means? Could someone go into a bit more detail for me on those topics please? (What are PE tables?)

WOT is definitely something I enjoy more nowadays but I still want more acceleration!(I've already started saving for my 4.10's!!) I've read about a few shops in my area already on these boards. I should be good as far as picking a shop, I was just more concerned with what it would take to actually drop my car off and pick it up fully tuned and ready to rock!

If you examine your MASS Air Flow Sensor you will see that there is a fine screen on the inlet side. If your going to have the car tuned, you can remove it.

There is hot coolant flowing through the Throttle body. There are fittings that you can purchase to eliminate the coolant from throwing through that TB.

PE Power Enrichment Tables, thats a tuning thing.
