Drove car yesterday over 100 miles with no problems or warning signs. Today I went to back car out of garage and it won't start. Starter runs fine but won't engage. No clicking sounds anywhere just the starter turning. Is this a solenoid problem?? Just had car in the shop last week and they did have the starter off for another issue. Could a wire be loose causing this? All other electrical items working fine. Thanks people.
If the starter is spinning but not engaging to the flywheel, I would pull the starter and inspect the teeth on it. Most likely the solenoid is failing.
Sound like your solenoid is working since the starter is spinning, you will have to remove starter, and replace the starter drive, it engages the flywheel and turns engine over.
I agree, I think it is the starter drive as well. Thanks a bunch.....
The starter motor cannot run unless the solenoid is working. Guess everyone agrees on that.
The starter clutch could be stripped so the motor cannot drive it.
