I assume it is the best effective Pads you want to know about.
I did wote for hawks Plus, they really do the job, but they make allot of dust and scream sometime, but it is the price to pay for the best performance.
Best for what??? The "best " street" pad is definately not the best "track" pad! I personally like the Carbotech Panther Plus pads for the track. They are very kind to the rotors and have excellent feel and control and provide longer service than many of the other "performance" pads out there. For the street I use the stock pads, but I hear that the new ceramic pads are almost dust free and have good stopping ablilty. :yesnod:
The best all around pad for stopping, dust, and noise would probably be stock.
If you want the best for lack of dust and noise, then I would say the Raybestos QS pads, but their stopping power lacks horribly.
If you want the best stopping street pad, it would probably be the PFC Z's or the HAWK HP PLUS pads, but the dust and noise is much worse.
If you want the best pad for track use, it would probably be the PFC 99's, but then you have to deal with high temperatures and having to warm the pads up before they stop good, but you better be strapped in tight when you smash the pedal with them all warmed up.
Pads are a threeway battle between noise, dust and stopping power. There is no perfect pad solution so you have to buy on what qualities are most important to you.
Check out the racing section on the forum for quite extensive brake pad discussions.
Best overall street pad I'd have to say the AC Delco Ceramic Wave II pads. Almost no dust, no noise, and they stop just as good as stock. Great all around pad. For track, I've heard nothing but good things about the Hawk pads.
Anyone try EBC Greenstuff yet?
They claim to be the best of both worlds.
For now I use Raybestos QS for the street and Hawk HPS for canyons/track. The QS pads are fine as long a you don't make more than 2 hard stops in less than 2 minutes. If you do, they fade away badly. They actualy have a much better feel when cold than the HPS pads do.

Cool. How do the ceramics compare on price and longevity?
Cool. How do the ceramics compare on price and longevity?
Ceramics are usually cheaper than stock pads, they last a real long time, they throw no dust, and are very quiet. Therefore, you know that their braking power cannot be very impressive. However, if you do not put the car through extreme braking conditions, you will love them.
I am running the Raybestos QS Ceramic pads on my car right now. I don't mind them, but they definitely do not give me the braking power I desire. I plan on going with the PFC Z pads within the next month or two. I can put up with a bit more dust for improved braking and less fade.

Hey Charles. Just so you know when it comes time to replace your QS pads, I've tried as many as 4 repeated HARD stops (70-20mph), and notice no fade at all with the AC Delco ceramic pads. I've put about 500 miles on them, and they seem to stop every bit as good as stock. :yesnod: And my wheels stay clean too. :D

Is it possible that material science has scored here?

I may try a set of the GM's. I went up in the mountains with the Raybestos pads and after 2-3 hard downhill stops they could not even set off ABS!

That's not good to hear, I've got those pads on my car!
What's the rule of thumb on getting new pads WITHOUT getting new rotors, I got new rotors and pads about 5000-6000 miles ago and I've always had a slight squeek with them, I might go back to stock pads since they appear to work better. Or even get the Ceramic Wave II pads that were mentioned, what kind of price are we looking at here?

Just put mine on. Been doing some heavy braking. Seeing some dust. Definitely MORE dust than the Raybestos Ceramics.
At the moment I'm guessing the same as stock dust, maybe slightly more. LESS than the Hawk Streets. Supposedly the EBC Greens have better stopping power than the Hawk Streets and dust around stock levels. Will post a review at the end of the weekend.
FWIW, Hawk Streets have better stopping power than their race pads. The race just handle hi temps better with less fade.
Mello - Do the EBC's stop better than stock? Would they be good autoX/street pad to use?
Street and Race are 2 diff pad types.
Street has the highest coefficient of friction and occasional hard stops stop the fastest. Race pads are for repeated hi-temp heavy braking that you wouldn't see on the street. They don't stop as hard or fast as an aggresive street pad, but wear better on the rotors and don't fade.
EBC does have a Race pad. Red I think? Check tirerack.com
They do seem to stop well. I'd assume they are as good or a bit better than the Hawk Streets with less dust than the Hawks. Will post in another thread on Sun/Mon.
