I need help! Trying to remove my steering wheel and rented a puller from the local parts store. Turns out GM had to be different and instead of threading 2 holes in the steering wheel hub to accept the bolts from the puller, they went with 2 oval shaped slots that require a unique bolt. I need something with an oval head to fit into these slots. You then turn them 90*'s to lock in place - everything else from there is normal. Any thoughts?
got the puller legs from Napa - thanks everyone! The wheel was on there tight, nearly pulled one of the puller legs through the soft aluminum hub of the wheel.
Does anyone have a step by step to remove and reinstall the steering wheel?
I am most worried about it going off during the removal and install process.
Thanks
Just disconnect the battery and let it sit for like half an hour. Then remove the 2 bolts from the back of the wheel/bag they are torx. Then you can unhook the bag, take the nut off and pull the wheel off. With the battery disconnected and letting it sit for a bit to discharge it will not go off.
LOL! Gotta love the "get a service manual" replies. Let me give it a shot before the mods lock this thread down for being an old thread.
First the torx size you need is a T-27 with a 1/4" extension. Second see the link below. In the second post of the thread is a link to the whole procedure in pdf format. I swapped my wheel this summer and it's not too hard. Follow all the steps and you'll be just fine.
