Not really I've had the Blackwing in the car for a couple of three years and am now just getting around to installing the air screens to replace the solid fog light deflector. I had read all the post and have the service manual and you all say the job can be done from the top or the bottom. Lets just say I am a big person with big hands and there is no way I can do the job from the top. The car is up on the lift now and even from the bottom with just the wheel well shield off there is no way to get to the inside bolts.
Not to be stopped by that minor fact I decided to remove the radiator shield. No big deal only two bolts and a couple of wire harnes hold down. Anyway it is a good time to clean leaves and grass from the radiator and clean the Blackwing. Now for the question. Since I have the shroud off should I cut slits in it so it picks up air from under the car or will the screens be enough???
I'll check back in a couple of hours to see what you all have to say in the mean time I'll be removing the old fog light shrouds and installing the new ones with the screens.
Just cutting slots won't do you much good. I elected to upen up the area underneath the filter and install a stainless steel screen and polycarbonate scoop to blast cold air directly at the filter. The opened up fog light panels is a good second choice and you will definitely benefit from that mod. Back a few years ago, one guy who worked for GM recommended that a small length of hood seal be cut to allow all that air coming in the front to be channeled out over the hot engine, effectively. While this may not be practicle if you drive in the rain often, I thought it was a good idea and have done this to my seal.
Still, even if you do nothing else, your intake air temps will plummet during slow-moving conditions when heat soak will normally induce the ECU to retard timing to avoid predetonation.
Thanks for the info. Its all back together again, will see how it runs. I have a lower mesh screen installed so I don't pick up any more styrofome cups and other large pieces. What scoop did you use? Sounds like a good mod for the next time I have it apart. I don't worry about rain much as I live just north of you in MV.
I used one of many types of wall pockets that are sold at Staples. At first, I machined a PVC scoop out of a solid plate but someone here on the forum told me he used the wall pocket. I figured that I'd give that a try so that if anyone else wanted to do the same mod, they could just order or pick up one at Staples. Here's the link to my procedure (Cold Air Mod) and some others:

I performed that mod several years ago when I still had my LS1 and my Blackwing. The only change I made was not using the wire mesh screen. Worked like a charm and for cheap too.
