The old gaskets were 1/16" thick aluminum with sealant around the ports (probably aftermarket as the water pump has been replaced). The new GM gaskets I bought were typical thin gasket material. Why the different types? Which is better?

Only the '97s and '98s had the thin paper or composite type gasket. Beginning in '99 all C5s have the silicone gaskets on an "aluminum carrier". The later versions work on all LSx and AFAIK, the old paper type is no longer offered by GM.
I have one of the water pump gaskets picture above brand new in wrapper. It was left over from my truck motor rebuild. I ordered it from Gene, but I also got one in the box with the new water pump. You are welcome to have it, just PM me and I'll send it to you. Or, give Gene a call. Part #: 12610311

I have not had to replace a water pump yet. Is there a left and right gasket, or are the ports all on one side? If there are two gaskets, are they the same?
